Winchester Country Club is a family-oriented club in the Boston metropolitan suburbs with many amenities and activities campus wide including the main clubhouse which is host to many member social and dining events. The club offers a bustling swimming pool area, as well as racquet sports and a full year-round fitness center. One of the main attractions is the golf course which offers a challenge on its rolling terrain.
Since 1919, Winchester CC has hosted seven Massachusetts Amateur championships and two state opens in addition to other state and regional tournaments. However, its best-known contribution to Massachusetts golf is its annual father & son tournament, the longest running such event in the country. First held in 1919, as sons and fathers returned from World War I, the invitational tournament quickly became a mainstay in Massachusetts golf.
The Horticulturist is responsible for maintaining the mulch beds, flowerbeds and ornamental plantings to the highest standards. This includes the clubhouse, tennis courts, pool, fitness center, front entrance, parking lots, snack shack, Learning Center and Club owned properties. This hands-on position requires a positive attitude and a strong work ethic. This is a Full-Time, 40 hour/week position starting in Late March running through Thanksgiving.
Job Requirements:
1. Familiarity with proper plant selection for different environments around the clubhouse.
2. Knowledge of proper planting and pruning techniques and best management practices.
3. A student of garden cultivation.
4. Some supervisory experience: Golf Course Staff and Arborist can assist with time-consuming tasks.
5. Possess or working toward a Massachusetts Pesticide applicator’s license within 90 days.
6. Motivated self-starter who has an eye for details.
7. Develop and implement standard operating procedures for landscape management.
8. Can work in all weather conditions.
9. Flexible work schedule—work weekends and holidays as needed with event schedule.
10. Operation of power equipment and heavy machinery if needed.
Responsible for:
1. General maintenance of all clubhouse and club property landscapes.
2. Color change out and flowerbed maintenance.
3. Irrigation scheduling and proper hand watering practices for supplemental water.
4. Proper application, and timing of weed control, plant nutrient and plant protectant applications.
5. Budgeting and purchasing plant materials, fertilizers, tools, and chemicals.
Physical Requirements:
1. Required to bend, stoop, and stand up to 8 hours a day.
2. Must be able to lift, push, or move up to 50 lbs.
3. Work independently--able to move about departments and club buildings in a professional manner.
4. Must have good or corrected vision to select/stock merchandise and read labels.
5. Must be able to work in a busy environment.
