We are looking for an Associate Director, Policy Labs to join our team. Where in Wellcome will I be working? We lead Wellcome’s policy and political engagement, and build the partnerships that help us reach our goals. We currently have two teams delivering impactful policy analysis and outputs, partnerships and government dialogues: Policy and Government Relations and Strategic Partnerships. With the recruitment of this role, we will create a new Policy Labs team. The some of the existing Policy team will transfer into this new team, and we expect to add new posts in time. Policy and Partnerships works across Wellcome’s Discovery and Solutions areas. The Policy Labs team will develop our work to create a supportive science policy environment for discovery research. Our existing Policy team will continue to lead work on our three Solutions programmes on climate and health, mental health and infectious disease. Both Policy teams will work closely with GRSP to scale our impact. Our key stakeholders include governments and public bodies, multilateral organisations, the private sector and philanthropies. What will I be doing? The Associate Director, Policy Labs, will guide Wellcome’s UK and international science policy agenda, developing and leading a new team to develop and create policy solutions that respond to pressing issues for Wellcome’s mission. As the Associate Director, Policy Labs you will: Lead Wellcome’s UK and international science policy portfolio, prioritising work in service of Wellcome’s wider vision. Set up and deliver Wellcome Policy Labs: 2-3 lean, timebound policy programmes lasting 18-24 months that will identify policy solutions on priority policy issues for Wellcome. Work alongside the team to experiment with innovative and creative approaches to achieve their policy outcomes. Develop best in class products to foster progress and impact on priority science policy areas and within each Policy Lab programme. Contribute to a diverse and inclusive culture across the organisation, working across departments. Is this job for me? You will be an experienced policy leader, with a proven track record of delivering policy outcomes in a global context. You will use your creativity to shape and deliver ambitious policy programmes that use Wellcome’s strengths and networks to achieve our goals. You’ll be an adept leader of people, and collaborate effectively across the organisation. You may bring an existing network and experience from science policy or a related field. We are looking for someone who has: Demonstrable experience of delivering policy outcomes in a global context, including working through others to deliver policy outcomes where no direct power is held. Substantial experience of delivering policy advice to decision-makers on complex or technical issues. Experience of briefing public or non-expert audiences, including through media appearances. Ability to identify desired long-term policy outcomes and define activities required to deliver them, drawing on Wellcome’s strengths and networks and managing risks to delivery as they appear. Well-developed and demonstrable strategic planning skills – identifying the work and tools required to deliver goals and mobilising resources to achieve this.
