The Technical Design Manager will be responsible for a structured, thorough process of design for vehicle conversion, balancing customer requirements with ease of manufacture, to maximise quality and minimise factory cost.
This role is responsible and leading the way for new product development within the business, working closely with technical sales.
You will employ, where appropriate, ‘Design for Manufacture’ principles, and deploy engineering know how to improve product quality. Working closely with the QA Manager you will also play a leading role in general quality / operational improvement.
This role sits within the Senior Leadership Team.
Required Knowledge / Skills / Experience
1. Degree in Engineering
2. 5+ years in management position
3. Previous experience of working in a fast-paced engineering / manufacturing organisation
4. Strong interpersonal skills and able to communicate clearly and effectively at all levels of the business
5. Mechanical Design
6. Familiar with automotive electrics, especially EVs (desirable)
7. Awareness of refrigeration systems (desirable)

Responsibilities
1. You will oversee all aspects of Design, maintaining thorough and well organised designs / drawings / BOM’s, for all factory orders and new product development activity. You will identify and execute any update of designs / drawings, to minimise ill-fitting kits / installations and to satisfy compliance. This needs to be actioned quickly, in collaboration with Manufacturing.
2. You will work in collaboration with the QA Manager to ensure that build instructions issued to the factory are thorough and clear to follow.
3. You will ensure that Type Approval (Conformity of Production) requirements are actioned as required within the design process and be the first line liaison point for LCV OEM’s in conversion, technical and homologations teams.
4. Management of Type Approvals, ensuring business systems and processes are informed and equipped to deal with our obligations.
5. You will oversee all proactive product development activity, working closely with technical sales, Operations and customers where necessary.
6. You will participate in structured continuous improvement programmes, in pursuit of quality and cost down, in support of Operations and QA.
7. You will provide after sales technical help, visiting customers as required to assist with quality issues / warranty claims.
8. You will assist where technically necessary with a comprehensive written programme of equipment maintenance, for Operations to administer.
9. Collaborate with other business functions to define the “standard” coolkit offering. Embed standardisation into designs/BOMs while maintaining flexibility of customer requirements.
10. Key stakeholder in analysis of non-conformance and warranty data (in order to prioritise improvement projects and initiate engineering change).
11. Ownership of engineering change control process.
12. Contribute to senior management meetings (senior manager/”head of” but key decisions made without any consultation).
13. Collaborate extensively with QM, SCM and OM on conformity of production process.
14. Production/Industrial engineering activity and manufacturing process refinement.
