Join our Regional Civils team in Plymouth as a Environmental Sustainability Advisor - Plymouth and you can build something to be proud of. In this role, you will provide advice, support and guidance to our project teams on all aspects of environmental management, meeting legal and company standards and helping deliver a culture of continual improvement. It will support site-based project design, construction controls and mitigations, sustainability opportunities and engagement with clients, stakeholders and environmental authorities. What you'll be doing The accountabilities and responsibilities of the role holder include to: Contribute to the strategic implementation of our Regional Civils sustainability plan, driving actions, monitoring progress and reporting to senior Environmental Sustainability Team and Regional Leadership Team. Manage project environmental risks and opportunities, supporting project teams to develop and maintain local environmental and sustainability management plans and risk assessments. Actively lead environment and sustainability, engaging project teams to encourage and promote sustainable behaviours and innovations, deliver positive outcomes and maintain project documentation. Provide support and advice on environmental management, compliance and project specific mitigation measures including pollution control and ecology protection. Support other Environmental Advisors/Consultants and liaise with other group Sustainability teams to deliver best sustainability outcomes for the projects. Support teams’ applications for consent, licences or permits as required and ensure project environmental compliance responsibilities are maintained. Upskill the project team and contractors on environment and sustainability responsibilities and controls via work package plans, toolbox talks and on-site learning and development. Developing a plan for education and reporting progress. Ensure upload of environmental data monthly to the sustainability portal, working with project teams to develop the most effective process. Deliver monthly environmental sustainability performance reporting to the Regional Civils business via project performance reviews, and to the client via KPI reporting. Being the strategic voice for Environmental Sustainability performance, priorities, initiatives and sustainability plan review with the project Leadership Team. Support work winning activities as required Monitor and investigate environmental incidents, complaints and close call reporting. Ensure corrective actions are taken forward and support the business to implement controls to prevent repeat occurrence. Undertake planned & unplanned inspections, audits and reviews of site activities, including facilitating external audits by clients and certification bodies. Produce formal reports on findings and communicate these to the project team. Be involved at the planning stage to support design teams to identify and control risk and identify opportunities to reduce carbon, waste and biodiversity net loss. Liaise with client, regulatory bodies and subcontractors on matters of environmental management Who we're looking for The following qualities/experience are essential: Strong knowledge of environment management with minimum of 2 years relevant experience working in a construction environment. Practical experience and sound knowledge of environmental statutory requirements, including environmental legislation, ecology mitigation, environmental licencing and consent applications and regulation. Understanding of the benefits of working collaboratively to obtain the best outcome. Good interpersonal, communication and influencing skills. Determination to see tasks through to completion, with excellent planning and organisation skills. Interpreting and managing data via databases, consistent record keeping and writing detailed reports. Full UK driver’s licence and flexibility to travel. Literate in MS Office – Word, Excel, Outlook. Professional Membership level of a relevant professional body (IEMA/CIEEM/CIWEM) Experience of deputising for more senior role. The following qualities/experience are desirable: Good knowledge and practical experience of developing, implementing and improving EMS’s certified to ISO 14001 accreditation. Internal environmental auditor qualification. Knowledge of the Construction Industry – specifically understanding of the rail/construction/engineering operating environment. Experience of taking on new challenges in a systematic and enthusiastic manner. Managing legislative issues for clients, including planning permissions and consents.
