Our Route
Central route is at the heart of Britain's railway. The route covers a major part of the national rail network and is a key commuter line in and out of Birmingham, with hundreds of thousands of passengers, and thousands of tonnes of freight carried within our route each week. Within our route is the Chiltern Main Line between London Marylebone and the West Midlands, the Snow Hill line from Stratford-upon-Avon to Worcester, the Cross City line in Birmingham, and lines to other cities including Wolverhampton, Coventry, Walsall, and Oxford.
We are home to Birmingham New Street station, the busiest station outside of London with more than 170,000 passengers using it every day.
Brief Description
As the Assistant Off Track Maintenance Engineer, you will be responsible for leading the drainage strategy and implementing Lord Mair recommendations for the Delivery Unit, providing technical guidance to Off Track Section Managers in relation to drainage solutions and specifications.
About the role (External)
What will you be doing?
As an Assistant Track Maintenance Engineer [Off Track] you will be involved in the following activities:
1. Responsible for requesting additional Drainage budget schemes from Principal Route Engineer team
2. Developing drainage reports/power BI systems relating to DU drainage
3. Competency upskilling of Section Manager teams in relation to water management
4. Competency upskilling of Section Manager teams in relation to vegetation management
5. Provide technical guidance to the Off Track team to achieve business and functional objectives and meet key performance measures
6. Manage the arrangements for staff safety and competence
7. Monitor asset performance, reliability, productivity and efficiency
8. Provide technical guidance to Off Track Section Managers in relation to vegetation management, drainage solutions and specifications
9. Undertake survey and design work
10. Manage the assurance and non-compliance process within the delivery unit
11. Undertake technical inspections and investigations
12. Provide local requirements to arrange track monitoring trains and receive outputs
13. Maintain the accuracy of systems, databases and records
14. Review and approve method statements and/or plans for design and/or work activities as required
15. Undertake an agreed programme of staff surveillance, work quality and asset condition checks
16. Assist in Technical PWay management in liaison with the TME
In order to be successful in this role, we would like you to have/to be:
* Drainage/Off Track experience
* Knowledge of maintenance delivery processes and techniques
* Knowledge of safety and compliance management processes
* Knowledge of operational railway environment
* Detailed knowledge of relevant standards and procedures
* Design knowledge and experience
* Failure/incident management and rectification techniques
* Knowledge of other functional disciplines
* Good interpersonal, influencing, communication and organisation skills
* HNC/HND or equivalent qualification
It's not mandatory to have the below, but it would be desirable to have:
* Civil engineering or water management engineering experience
* Knowledge of coaching techniques

Salary: £43,588 raising to £49,037 per annum. Network Rail adheres to a structured pay framework, any salary offered will be within the pay range advertised.
