Job summary
We are looking for a Health Care Assistant to work within The Fernhurst Centre, as part of their team covering both their designated Outpatients and in their Day Unit.
1. To play an active role in meeting the needs of patients, under the supervision of the Registered Nurse (RN), and working within the Trust policies and procedures.
2. To assist with the delivery of patient care, including patient observations, testing specimens, assisting with mobilising, and supporting patients during procedures.
3. To help with restocking of key supplies for the Department.
4. Assist with the provision of healthcare services within the Trust.
5. Assist with the effective use of manpower and resources in accordance with the Trust's policies and procedures.
Main duties of the job
6. To assist patients to carry out personal care
7. To assist patient to mobilise where appropriate
8. Testing specimens and recording the results
9. Taking and recording of temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, height and weight on admission to the unit, under the instruction from the RN. Recording the results appropriately and reporting any abnormalities to the RN or Nurse in Charge
10. Under the supervision of the RN, support patients undergoing clinical procedures ensuring their comfort and safety
11. To restock departmental areas as required reporting any shortages to the NIC/ward manager
12. To adhere to the policy for the control of infection

Job responsibilities
13. To actively take part in meeting the needs of the patients under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN), working within the Trusts policies and procedures and the philosophy of the department
14. To be an effective member of a multidisciplinary team under the direction and supervision of an RN and to be continually aware of the need for confidentiality
15. Where appropriate, to continue to develop own capabilities in nursing related tasks in order to deliver a high standard of care
16. To participate in ensuring effective use of resources and reduction of wastage within the departmental areas
17. The post holder will have direct contact with patients in their capacity as HCA under the direction and supervision of a RN
18. There will be a requirement for administrative functions within this role data input and maintaining health records
19. To work in a team with Nursing and Medical staff and other Healthcare, Allied Health Professionals and support staff.
20. To report all incidents/accidents involving patients and staff to the RN and to assist in any enquiries. Completing required incident report/Datix
21. To answer telephone enquiries pleasantly, in accordance with the Trusts telephone answering technique and take appropriate action
22. To participate in the use of IT within the department

23. Participate in Improvement Huddles to identify potential improvements to service delivery

Person Specification
According to personal specification and experience
Essential
26. Healthcare related NVQ, BTEC or equivalent at level 3.
27. Maths and English GCSE passes at D and above.
28. NHS care experience.
29. Knowledge and experience of NHS IT systems/ applications.
30. Experience in assisting patients in moving and handling.
Desirable
31. Working in UHSNHS Foundation Trust
32. Advanced computer skills
33. Communication skills training
34. Experience with patients receiving care for cancer related illness
