The Role
Reporting directly to the Faculty Pro Vice-Chancellor, in this role, you will provide strategic leadership in promoting and enhancing research income, quality, impact and innovation across the Faculty. Working with the PVC Research and your counterpart in the Faculty of Sciences, you will ensure the delivery of the Research Excellence Framework (REF) through the creation of a positive research culture and environment. Collaborating closely with departmental Directors of Research, senior colleagues in Professional Services and the Graduate School, you will drive University and Faculty R&I activity in support of University strategy. You will also enhance the engagement of the Faculty with external stakeholders, funders and relevant agencies. In the role, you will support a culture that enhances and celebrates inclusivity and diversity in research, and that values researcher development. As a member of the Faculty Executive Committee, you will be expected to make a wider contribution to leadership and management beyond your direct portfolio.
What you’ll do
* Develop a research, knowledge exchange and innovation culture that is aligned to the University Strategy, University Research Plan and relevant policies, and enhances research quality impact and income;
* Work collaboratively to facilitate cross-Departmental and cross-Faculty interdisciplinary research, knowledge exchange and innovation activities;
* In collaboration with other Assistant Pro-Vice Chancellors develop an innovative strategy for research including strategies to strengthen the Faculty identity and meet its strategic research priorities, key performance indicators, targets and impact;
* Promote active engagement with research performance monitoring and support the PVCR in the delivery of the REF requirements, data and information;
* Provide guidance on strategic priorities in the recruitment of research positions as well as research capacity of applicants for academic appointments in the Faculty;
* Mentor and/or arrange mentoring for Faculty staff in relation to best practice in research and innovation and facilitate processes for peer review of external applications within the Faculty;
* Actively support Faculty staff with the development of grant applications for research, knowledge exchange and/or Innovation;
* Provide appropriate staff development, particularly for new staff and early career researchers, and actively contribute to the University’s commitment to the Concordat to the Support the Career Development of Researchers;
* Promote active engagement from Faculty staff with research ethics, integrity and governance policies and process;
* Provide appropriate support on relevant issues concerning research student welfare and development;
* Act as Faculty Representative in the Graduate School;
* Represent the Faculty as a member of University Research and Innovation Committee, Chair the Faculty R&I Committee and contribute to relevant research working and advisory groups;
* Actively promote appropriate professional learning opportunities;
* Keep abreast of sector developments and bring new ideas to the University;
* Support the development of Welsh-medium scholarship and research, in alignment with University and Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol targets;
* In collaboration with the other APVCs, embed the Welsh language within the faculty; be committed to the principles of promoting a bilingual culture within the University;
* To undertake health and safety duties and responsibilities appropriate to the post;

* Any other duties reasonably requested.
Who you are – Qualifications, Experience, Knowledge and Skills required
Essential
1. An advanced degree (PhD or equivalent) in an appropriate discipline
2. A strong academic track record in a related discipline in the Faculty
3. Demonstrable evidence of leadership and management within higher education
4. Experience in leading successful collaborations
5. Effective and persuasive communication skills with the ability to build strong relationships with staff at all levels
6. Ability to act decisively and with good judgement
7. Ability to operate at a strategic level, whilst demonstrating a pragmatic approach to operational needs and priorities
8. Oral (spoken) and Written Welsh Level B1*, or evidence to demonstrate an on-going commitment to learn Welsh to this level.
Desirable
1. Oral (spoken) and Written Welsh Level C1.*
