Job introduction The Volk's Railway Technician's responsibility is to maintain, repair and service the Volk's Electric Railway in order to provide a seven-day a week service from Easter to September so that the public can travel safely on this heritage railway [the world’s oldest electric railway]. To assist in refurbishment projects and the winter maintenance program during the closed season to ensure the Railway is fully operational for the start of the season. About the role A unique opportunity has arisen to become totally involved in the maintenance, operation, and development of Brighton’s famous seafront railway. Responsibilities include assisting with the supervision and effective management of staff resources, assisting/covering for the Railway Engineer ensuring the safe operation of the railway and trains, while promoting the service to the public. The person will be required to show that they have proven skills in woodworking, mechanics, and particularly electrical engineering to carry out repairs and maintenance, Candidates must be able to use hand tools and workshop machinery, as the trains are maintained on site and repairs carried out at the Railway Conservation shed. Experience in basic electrics, and fault finding, is essential. Checking under the trains is a regular duty each morning. The position requires the candidate to be physically fit, as you will be required to assist the Volk’s Staff and volunteers in repairing the track, line & sleepers and work in and out of a pit under the trains. Minor woodwork and metalwork structural repairs are also carried out to the fleet of five wooden trains which date back to 1901. Proven fitting skills, and a willingness to work a rota, including two weekends a month throughout the season from Easter to the end of September should be demonstrated in order to ensure a quality service is provided to the railway customers. An understanding of Health and Safety is essential. Candidates should be computer literate in Microsoft Excel and Word as you will write up daily train test reports. Taking five short exams will be a requirement of the position to show competence in railway matters. A seasonal roster is operated over 4 weeks with an average 37 hour week including working two weekends in four. Weekdays are approximately 8.45am to 5.45pm, weekends to 8.45 am 6.45pm.
