Serco have a great opportunity for a Librarian to join the team at Derwentside Immigration Removal Centre (IRC).
As the Librarian, you will play a crucial role, supporting the daily operational running of the library, keeping control of all stock, bookings and other essential activities. You will work closely with the library team to support all residents who use the facilities each day.
We are looking for a personable, innovative individual who will thrive in the custodial environment.
General Responsibilities:
* Promote the Library/Learning Resource Centre (LRC) services to residents, staff and visitors to the centre.
* Motivate and provide solutions to non-attendance to all services.
* Provide a service appropriate to the leisure, cultural, pastoral and educational needs of the centre population, ensuring equal access to all.
* Complete routine operations within the library and, in co-operation with other staff, ensure the maintenance of good order and reasonable behaviour by users.
* Classify and organise resources using appropriate strategies i.e. alphabetical / Dewey referencing.
* Complete regular stock maintenance.
* Use a designated library management system to manage stock issues / returns / departed / renewals.
* Provide a request service (using external sources of supply as necessary).
* Promote and encourage reading: support individuals in making reading choices.
* Offer an LRC induction session to new users.
* Keep up to date with new and topical publications to reflect the ethos of the Derwentside LRC.
* Market and publicise LRC services to the residents.
* Respond to routine enquiries and requests: books / electronic resources / magazines / information.
* Shelve returned materials in a timely manner.
* Deliver and collect materials to and from users who cannot visit the LRC.
* Ensure that the notice boards are regularly updated.
* Participate in additional recreational and educational activities: e.g. book clubs, reading clubs, Shannon Trust Reading Scheme, delivery of appropriate learning / activity sessions in LRC.
* Provide appropriate legal materials as required under PSI / PSO guidance.
* Provide legal sessions in the LRC and ensure compliance with the legal material available in the library including PSI's.
* Engage the LRC community with topical activities: competitions / quizzes / games.
* Work as part of the LRC team to deliver a pro-active, inclusive and effective customer-led service.
* Understand Learning and Skills wider departmental practices.
* Attend any other departmental meeting as required.
* Maintain links and information exchange with appropriate partnerships.
* Undertake other duties as directed by senior management.
What you'll need to do the role:
In order to carry out this role successfully, you must have a minimum level 2 qualification in English and Maths.
Desirable:
* Customer Service Qualification.
* ICT Qualification.
* Demonstration of flexibility and the ability to work to deadlines and under pressure.
* Experience of working in a custodial and/or library environment would be advantageous.
