What you will do in your working day
The Laboratory Technical Apprentice's job involves receiving, organizing, and processing patient and nonclinical samples. They'll handle tasks like isolating cells, separating plasma and serum, thawing cells, and counting them. The role also includes keeping the lab tidy, preparing lab materials, managing cell inventory, and assisting other scientists with experiments when needed.
Essential functions of the job include but are not limited to:
* Receive inventory and process fresh biological samples
* Receive and inventory all incoming fresh biological samples into electronic LIMS database
* Perform cell isolations and/or separate whole blood and body fluids into various components
* Perform cryopreservation of all isolated cells
* Prepare all reagents used in lab
* Create and perform first key of data collection sheets
* Perform equipment preventive maintenance
* Perform cell thawing and counting
* Effectively manage UK cell-based inventory
* Maintain accurate, up to date records (lab and timesheet)
* Health & Safety compliance
The training you will be getting
Over 21 months, you’ll devote a minimum of 6 hours of your working week on ‘off the job’ training. This can include theory training (for example, virtual lessons & online learning), alongside practical training (for example shadowing, mentoring, & time spent writing assignments. Together this will count towards a Level 3 Laboratory Technician apprenticeship. You’ll be trained by an expert tutor from Tiro as well as an experienced mentor at Precision for Medicine who together, will make sure you develop the knowledge, skills, and work habits you’ll need to succeed in your career.
Being an apprentice is hands-on, so you’ll get the chance to learn things you might otherwise not have experienced in a university or college environment.
