The Traumaand OrthopaedicDepartmenttreatsboth elective and emergencypatients.There isacloserelationshipbetweentheDepartmentandtheAccidentandEmergencyDepartment.
There are two operating theatreswhich are reserved exclusively for orthopaediccases and is equippedwith lamina flow air supply for joint replacements.It is fully equippedwith modern osteosynthesis equipment, a full range of modern instrumentation for orthopaedic surgery, and mobile X-ray image intensification.A furtheroperatingtheatre is available for other cases andemergencies.
Thereareweekdayalldaytraumalistsandonelisteachdayattheweekends.
Thirty adult beds are provided on one ward (Ward 23) and children's beds are available as required on the Paediatric Ward.There is a dedicatedday case ward, where seventeenbeds are nominated for use by the OrthopaedicDepartment for each list, and connectsto a recently openeddedicated day surgerytheatre.Other beds are available on othersurgical wards.
Complex head injuries and other neurosurgical conditions are referred to the Royal Free Hospital,London NW3.Plasticsurgical cases, including certain hand conditions,are referred to the visitingconsultantat AddenbrookesHospital,Cambridgewho has a weekly out-patient clinicattheLutonandDunstableHospital.SpinalinjuriesmaybereferredtotheRNOH,or Addenbrookes or managed in-house.
Thispostwillprovide training andexperience inawiderangeofOrthopaedic and Trauma Surgery in accordance with the curriculum published by the SAC.
The duties of the post are the normal duties of those of a ST3 equivalent and above in Trauma andOrthopaedics' Surgery andwillinclude attendance atwardroundsandtheatre sessions as determined by their Consultant andassistance atOrthopaedic andFractureClinics.
The successful candidate will communicate appropriately with the General Practitioners andmaintain satisfactory communicationswithothermedical staff,not only intheir own but also in other specialties as necessary to benefit the patient in their care. Addition, as necessary they will communicate with other hospitals or agencies for similar reasons.
Animportant aspect of the Senior Clinical Fellow's work beto supervise the collation of data. The Senior Clinical Fellow will be expected to assist with appropriateplanningofwork andtheestablishment ofthehighest standards ofquality
