About the Role:
The School of Law, Gender and Media at SOAS invites applications for a temporary post at the level of Project Coordinator (Comparative Penal Abolitionism) starting in February 2025.
SLGM has been awarded a grant from the Open Society Foundation to fund a comparative project exploring contemporary racialised, discriminatory, repressive penal (policing and penitentiary) policies, norms, practices, and institutions in post-colonial and post-settler colonial societies, with a primary focus on abolitionist analysis, research, discourse, response and activism.
The Comparative Penal Abolitionism project is envisaged to identify, commission and guide a team of 5-6 primary established researchers, with a profile in penal abolitionism, in selected African, Asian, and North/South American jurisdictions, with a view toward the drafting and submission of corresponding comprehensive country reports outlining the history/genealogy, contemporary configuration, and future prospects of abolitionist discourse and practice, with a view toward facilitating the further development of a transnational abolitionist advocacy network. The project will encompass a comparative abolitionist conference in the final phase, to be hosted at SOAS, as well as online and in-person interim abolitionist workshops or colloquia, with the participation of the primary researchers, other abolitionist scholars and activists, and interested or invited members of the wide academic community and public.
The Project Coordinator will work under the supervision of the Principal Investigator and will be responsible for:
1. The identification, selection and contracting of the Primary Researchers,
2. The maintenance of communication and correspondence, including response to queries from the Primary Researchers and other interested parties,
3. The monitoring of progress on the drafting of country reports,
4. Project administration including regular reporting, bookkeeping, and disbursement of funds,
5. Dissemination of project information, findings and events, chiefly by on the dedicated SOAS project webpage,
6. The organisation, scheduling, and travel arrangements for meetings, workshops and the conference.
