Salary : £22,796 per annum
We currently have a vacancy for a Deputy Shop Manager, primarily based at our brand new Bishop Auckland Retail Park shop but flexibly covering all shops in our catchment area. The focus on this role is to assist the Shop Manager in effectively managing day to day shop operations, supporting the Shop Manager to achieve shop sales and contribution targets and to deputise for the Shop Manager as required.
THE ROLE OF OUR DEPUTY SHOP MANAGERS
The role of the deputy shop manager is varied, busy and gives the opportunity to lead and manage the staff and volunteer team in the absence of the shop manager.
Being a larger store, the shop requires and receives high volumes of stock to be processed, so the role is physically demanding. The team will continue to work efficiently and proactively to ensure the store remains full of fresh stock and income is maximised.
The shop is also open 7 days a week, so there will be weekend working on a rota basis.
ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Financial and Supervisory Responsibility
* Delegated supervisory responsibilities for the shop and management and supervision of Volunteers as required.
* Delegated financial responsibility including daily cashing up for the shop.
Working Patterns
* A monthly rotation of a five-day working pattern, including weekends and bank holidays.
* Flexibility required where reasonable and appropriate to accommodate short notice alterations to working pattern. Must be available to cover in other shops within retail team as required.
* Occasional travel to team meetings.
Commercial Management
* Assist the Shop Manager in maximising sales opportunities to assist in achieving sales targets.
* Demonstrate excellent customer service, promoting good practice within the shop and providing coaching and feedback to the shop team as required.
* Effectively communicate and promote the Butterwick Hospice brand, engaging with the local community and building relationships with external partners.
* Select stock to achieve sales targets and maximise contribution through appropriate value & price.
* Assist the Shop Manager to ensure shop floor is well stocked and effectively merchandised at all times.
* Prepare a detailed written handover for the Shop Manager each day to communicate events, issues and sales patterns.
People Management
* Providing effective, motivational leadership and delegation to volunteers at all times.
* Maintain rotas to ensure the shop is adequately covered.
* Assist the Shop Manager in the training and development of volunteers.
* Liaise with the Shop Manager to assess and maintain volunteer performance.
* Implement the induction program and ongoing training for all volunteers.
Stock Management
* Manage relationships with waste management and services ensuring timely pick-ups, supply of bags and boxes.
* Organise surplus stock to supply other shops when requested.
* Maintain display, merchandising and window dressing standards and train staff and volunteers to do so.
* Maintain stock density and rotation procedure – working to two-week cycles.
* Provide adequate stock control of new goods.
Additional Responsibilities
* Attend and contribute to all Retail Team Meetings.
* Play a key role in enabling the shop to represent Butterwick Hospice and increase the knowledge of the local community about Butterwick Hospice’s mission and work.
* Empower the team to respond to all appeals and fundraising opportunities.
SKILLS, EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE
Essential
* Retail management experience.
* Commercial focus with a track record of achieving targets.
* Proven experience of working collaboratively and effectively as part of a team.
* Ability to work independently, prioritising own tasks and time.
* Good written and interpersonal skills.
* Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel.
Desirable
* Experience of working in a charity, social enterprise and/or charity retail environment.
* Ability to understand and interpret basic financial reports.
