The Cabinet Secretary for Education and Skills has identified teacher recruitment and workforce planning as key portfolio challenges. Significant work is being progressed by the Education Workforce Unit to develop policy solutions, at pace, to help tackle those challenges. This post will play a key role in this work. The Unit sits within Workforce, Infrastructure and Digital Division, in Learning Directorate and is responsible for a range of issues relating to teachers including: workforce planning and monitoring, teacher training, pay and conditions, teacher recruitment and retention; and engagement with the teaching unions. This is a high-profile and dynamic policy area. This varied post combines development of policy and strategy, data analysis, and ministerial and stakeholder engagement. You will manage challenging timeframes, provide advice to ministers and lead progress across the team, while taking responsibility for specific policy areas and providing secretariat for senior stakeholder groups. Responsibilities Contribute to the development of innovative policy and strategy relating to teacher recruitment, retention and workforce planning. Lead on an annual teacher workforce planning process, including engaging with universities, analysis student teacher intakes, working closely with analytical colleagues on detailed workforce modelling, advising Ministers and managing a £13 million budget. Plan and coordinate the work of the Strategic Board for Teacher Education, including drafting papers, overseeing workplans and briefing senior officials and Ministers. Represent SG on an external working group, tasked with developing a new IT system at pace, to manage the placement of student teachers in schools. Line management and countersigning officer responsibilities, offering developmental support and advice Make high quality contributions to Ministerial briefings, commissions, and other core business, such as PQs and FOI requests, supporting the staff in the team to complete such work on time, and escalating complex queries as needed.
