The Cancer Matron is a key member of the Surgery and Cancer Senior Nursing Leadership team, responsible for driving high-quality, safe, patient-centred care and supporting the lead cancer nurse in strategic service and workforce developments within the cancer service. Inclusive leadership and accountability: Uphold and demonstrate Whittington Health NHS Trust values. Provide compassionate and inclusive line management and leadership to the SACT Unit Manager, CNSs, and AHPs. Ensure nursing practice reflects current evidence-based clinical guidelines. Actively embed the Trust's Nursing, Midwifery, and AHP Strategy within areas of responsibility. Promote evidence-based practice and lead on the improvement of nursing standards in cancer nursing. Deputise for the lead cancer nurse at sector and national level meetings where appropriate. Governance, patient safety, and quality: Implement a robust Clinical Governance process for cancer in partnership with the lead cancer nurse. Develop a culture that encourages the cancer workforce contribution to Clinical Governance. Investigate accidents and incidents, identify clinical risks, and implement actions. Coordinate relevant audits and monitoring data to assess standards of clinical care, staffing, and patient experience. Support the Trust's complaints procedure and respond proactively to patient/relative concerns. Environmental cleanliness and infection prevention and control: Work collaboratively with the infection prevention and control team to ensure robust hygiene practices on the SACT unit. Ensure SACT nursing practice reflects current evidence-based clinical guidelines in relation to infection prevention and control. Establish effective administrative and support services for the SACT Unit. Patient experience and reducing health inequalities: Ensure patients are treated with dignity and respect, and that the patient experience is tailored to individual needs, ensuring the implementation of personalised cancer care objectives. Promote the full implementation of personalised cancer care objectives alongside the lead cancer nurse. Utilise the results of the National Cancer Patient Experience Survey to develop service improvement plans for the benefit of our patient experience. Performance and operational oversight: Manage the SACT unit budget. Actively participate in supporting the achievement of cancer waiting times performance targets and patient flow through the hospital. Monitor finance and activity targets in collaboration with the finance team. Education, training, and development: Assess staff skills and develop/commission training programs alongside the lead cancer nurse. Supervise and appraise the SACT Unit Manager, CNSs, and AHPs, facilitating individual development opportunities. Implement continuous professional development, in particular, level 2 psychological skills training alongside the lead psychologist for cancer. Ensure clinical supervision attendance alongside the lead psychologist for cancer. Research and development: Actively participate in relevant research and implementation opportunities. Support staff involved in research and advancing evidence-based practice. Ensure feedback loops are in place for sharing of quality improvement projects. Collaborative working and clinical effectiveness: Promote effective clinical care and collaborative working with patients, carers, and colleagues. Establish local improvement collaborations where appropriate. Attend local cancer multidisciplinary team meetings on a rotational basis to provide nursing leadership and oversight. Work closely with the lead cancer nurse on several projects spanning patient experience, cancer inequalities to workforce development. Service improvement and transformation: Promote the view that quality improvement is everybody's business. Support the gathering of insight and feedback from patients, staff, and carers for service improvement and transformation.
