Job Description
This is a fantastic opportunity to join a diverse team responsible for the Annual Report & Accounts for the Department and its consolidated bodies, collaborating with stakeholders across the department, Government Finance Function, National Audit Office, and HM Treasury.
You will support the delivery of the annual financial statements, covering over £20bn in spending and £600bn in assets. These complex group accounts, including major entities like Network Rail and HS2 Ltd, are laid before Parliament and receive significant attention.
Your focus in this role will be delivering core financial controls and providing technical accounting advice. You will play a critical part in maintaining the integrity of the organisation’s financial statements.
Responsibilities
Include, but not limited to:
1. Assisting in the preparation of group accounts, consolidating financial data from the core department and its consolidated bodies.
2. Leading the preparation of key financial statement reconciliations and disclosures, such as the Statement of Cash Flows and Statement of Changes in Equity.
3. Manage key financial accounting controls and accounting processes.
4. You will have strong Excel skills to support financial analysis, reporting, and data management tasks.
5. Utilise finance systems, including SAP ERP and BPC, to manage reporting and accounting tasks.
6. Support the Financial Accounts team in building effective working relationships with colleagues across Group Finance, the wider business and consolidated bodies.

Person Specification
To be successful in this role you will have experience of financial accounting and a strong track record of delivery.
You will have excellent planning and organisational skills, with a strong ability to work confidently with large data sets using advanced Excel functions for analysis and reporting.
You will have experience in reconciling financial data, ensuring accuracy and resolving discrepancies efficiently.
You will have excellent stakeholder management and communication skills to engage a wide range of stakeholders on complex financial issues.
You will have outstanding verbal and written communication skills, to effectively interact with key stakeholders, with the ability to explain complex financial concepts in a clear and concise manner.
Additional Information
A minimum 60% of your working time should be spent at your principal workplace, although requirements to attend other locations for official business, or carry out detached duty in another DfT workplace, will also count towards this level of attendance.
Occasional travel to other DfT offices will be required.
Qualifications
You will either be qualified, or part qualified with CCAB, CIMA or IFAC equivalent. If part qualified, you must be actively studying towards completing your accountancy qualification within the next 18 months.
Part-qualified candidates will receive full support from the Department to complete their qualification, including an excellent learning and development package with tuition and exam assistance.
