The Legal Services Department provides legal advice and representation to both Humberside Police & South Yorkshire Police. As a Solicitor/Senior Solicitor, you will be responsible for:
* Investigating and managing a caseload of challenging and sensitive pre-litigated and litigated civil claims involving Public Liability, Employers Liability, RTC’s, Unlawful Arrest and False Imprisonment, and Judicial Review proceedings.
* Attending Court hearings, mediation, and settlement meetings, including conducting your own advocacy where appropriate.
* Providing legal advice to the Chief Constable and the Police & Crime Commissioner, and reporting to the Principal Lawyer & Head of Legal Services on all matters, incorporating the management and strategic direction of the litigation.
* Working with the Principal Lawyer in establishing and coordinating robust performance management systems for the litigation team, including drafting reports to senior stakeholders and recommending changes and improvements to business processes, structures, and cultures within the litigation team.
* Handling satellite litigation, including liaising with the IOPC on misconduct related matters, managing data protection claims, and addressing public law challenges such as Judicial Review and linked tribunal proceedings.
* Providing written advice on any aspect of the law relating to the Police Service, including implications of legislative changes and new training and operational policies.
* Advising on matters relating to the disclosure of information in civil proceedings, ensuring compliance with legislation, Case Law, and Force Policy.
Skills and Experience:
* Solicitor/Barrister/Legal Executive (Fellow).
* Legal qualification to degree level or equivalent.
* Detailed knowledge and advocacy skills in civil law.
* Experience in litigation and understanding of ECHR and Civil Procedure Rules.
* Experience in report writing, including provision of financial reserves.
* Ability to manage a diverse, high-risk, and complex caseload, providing clear and legally sound advice.
* Excellent oral and written communication skills to engage with all ranks of officer, support staff, and external agencies.
* Ability to use professional judgment for accurate legal decisions and evaluations.
* Management of legal caseloads and staffing resources.
* Approval of settlements within financial and insurance regulations.

Eligibility:
