This is a prestigious twelve month post is to commence in August 2025 working in the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in the Newcastle upon Tyne NHS foundation Trust. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to experience a wide variety of cases and procedures both within the department and in a multidisciplinary setting. Sarcoma, head and neck, breast reconstruction, facial reanimation, lower limb trauma reconstruction and abdominal wall reconstruction are all regularly undertaken, that the range of opportunities is vast. Joint cases with ENT, Maxillofacial, Orthopaedic, General, Transplant, Neuro, Vascular and Cardiothoracic surgeons as well as regular sarcoma and head & neck MDTs further broaden the scope of this post. Previous fellows have participated in more than 80 free tissue transfers during their post, plus an interesting number of non-microsurgical complex reconstructions.
The successful applicant will receive educational and clinical supervision. They will be encouraged to participate in audit and research and are expected to be involved in the post-operative care of their patients. There is no formal involvement in the registrar on call roster. The annual North East Flap Course and North East Microsurgery Course will allow certified teaching. Wet lab sessions at the Northern Surgical Training Centre, with access to a Da Vinci Robot further add to the value of this post.
This post is designed for a senior trainee post FRCS (Plast) or equivalent, however, it is also open to recent CCT holders or senior international trainees in Plastic Surgery. You will be the one fellow working with the existing micro surgeons based at the Royal Victoria Infirmary and Freeman Hospital. It is essential that you are able to work as a flexible member of a team with the present consultants and supporting staff members. This post has educational approval for candidates who are pre CCT. Post CCT holders will be expected to complete a formal Trust-based appraisal during the year.

Teaching and Research:
You will be required to undertake postgraduate teaching and the teaching of other health care professionals and to attend suitable postgraduate teaching sessions and courses. This post does not carry a significant teaching load.
Ample opportunities exist for research within the Trust and there are close links with Newcastle University. This is primarily an educational post with some service provision but it would be hoped you would be able to contribute to the research of the department through clinical trials and by developing links with the university. There is strong visual science, stem cell and genetic research being undertaken in the university.
Administration:
You will undertake administrative duties associated with the care of patients and the running of the clinical services in co-operation with the Head of Department. Secretarial support will be provided. You will be expected to take an active role in management, administration and audit and to undertake such continuing medical education as is recommended by the Royal College of Surgeons.
