Position
This role would suit someone already in a similar position or a current Lead Driller looking for a career change. This is a field based role with successful candidate be willing to stay away during the week if required.
Role Overview
We are seeking a Drilling Operations Supervisor to lead and manage drilling activities across multiple sites. This role is pivotal in ensuring drilling operations are carried out safely, efficiently, and in line with project requirements. The ideal candidate will be a strong leader with technical expertise, capable of overseeing teams, maintaining high operational standards, and ensuring compliance with health, safety, and environmental (HSE) regulations.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Management
• Plan, coordinate, and oversee daily drilling operations to meet project specifications, timelines, and budgets.
• Ensure the effective mobilisation and demobilisation of drilling rigs, equipment, and resources .
• Monitor site progress, address operational risks, and implement corrective measures to maintain efficiency.
• Ensure compliance with technical procedures and project deliverables.
Leadership & Team Management
• Lead and manage drilling teams, ensuring clarity in roles and responsibilities .
• Provide coaching and mentoring to enhance team skills and knowledge.
• Conduct performance evaluations, offering constructive feedback and development opportunities.
• Foster a culture of teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement .
Health, Safety & Environmental Compliance
• Champion a safety-first culture and ensure strict adherence to HSE regulations.
• Conduct and review risk assessments and method statements (RAMS) .
• Lead toolbox talks and safety briefings to keep teams informed of hazards and control measures.
• Investigate and report safety incidents, ensuring corrective actions are implemented.
• Ensure all operations minimise environmental impact and comply with sustainability goals.
Technical Oversight & Quality Assurance
• Review and verify drilling logs, site records, and technical documentation for accuracy.
• Provide technical guidance to resolve on-site challenges.
• Maintain quality control to ensure all deliverables meet client expectations.
Stakeholder & Client Engagement
• Act as the primary on-site representative, liaising with clients and stakeholders.
• Provide regular progress updates to clients and project managers.
• Attend site meetings and contribute technical insights where required.
• Build and maintain strong client relationships to ensure satisfaction and project success.
Equipment & Resource Management
• Oversee the maintenance, inspection, and utilisation of drilling rigs and equipment.
• Manage the procurement and allocation of tools, consumables, and materials.
• Identify and report equipment faults or defects, ensuring timely repairs or replacements.
• Ensure all equipment is securely stored and properly maintained .
What We’re Looking For
Essential Skills & Experience
• Proven experience supervising drilling operations, particularly in rotary drilling .
• Strong technical knowledge of GSHP borehole drilling .
• Demonstrated leadership experience with the ability to motivate and manage teams.
• Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to make quick, informed decisions.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills for reporting and client interaction.
Desirable Skills & Experience
• NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Land Drilling.
• First Aid certification, including emergency response training.
• Experience managing projects on large infrastructure or civil engineering sites .
