Auditory Verbal UK is seeking a passionate and strategically-minded individual with high-level financial expertise to support the charity deliver on its 10-year strategy to transform the landscape for deaf children and their families.
What will you be doing?
AVUK has embarked on a major 10-year strategy to deliver auditory verbal therapy to all children who would benefit from it. This exciting, but challenging, venture will see AVUK instrumental in training sufficient specialist Auditory Verbal therapists to provide the opportunity of early intervention support for all families who want their child to learn to listen and talk.
At present, far too many families are not able to access the support that they need in the critical first few years of their child’s life. For those who want their child to learn to listen and talk, there are only 26 specialist Auditory Verbal therapists nationally, significantly short of the 300 required to provide Auditory Verbal therapy to the estimated 7,200 deaf children under the age of five, meaning that only 8% of these children can access this life-changing programme. Our 10-year strategy is to transform services in the UK through creating a step-change in the number of specialist practitioners and ensuring that AVT is a standard option in publicly funded services nationally.
AVUK is looking for a new Treasurer to replace our current treasurer who has been with us for the past 9 years, which is the maximum tenure for a trustee.
Key duties of the treasurer include, but are not limited to:
* Chairing the Finance & Risk trustee board sub-committee, on a quarterly basis, to ensure management accounts, cashflow, periodic budgets and such other financial reports as required, are sufficiently scrutinised ahead of Board submission and appraising the Board of any specific issues.
* Advising on the financial implications of the organisation’s strategic plans and keeping the board informed about its financial duties and responsibilities.
* Ensuring that appropriate accounting procedures and controls are in place and that the charity complies with all its statutory governance and financial compliance requirements.
* Ensuring that the charity maintains an appropriate reserves policy and has an appropriate investment policy where appropriate.
* Ensuring the charity has in place suitable policies for the arrangements of loans or other facilities in the event of income shortfalls or cashflow problems.
What are we looking for?
* Financial qualifications and/or experience.
* Some experience of charity finance, fundraising and pension schemes.
* Strong relationship skills to work closely with the Director of Finance and Operations, as required.
* Skills to analyse proposals and examine their financial consequences.
* Being prepared to make unpopular recommendations to the board.
* A willingness to be available to staff for advice and enquiries on an ad hoc basis.
What difference will you make?
As part of Auditory Verbal UK's board you will support and shape our strategic direction. The Treasurer is a vital member of the board; liaising closely with our Director of Finance & Operations and maintaining an overview of the charity's affairs to ensure that risks are being properly evaluated and mitigated against, that proper financial records and procedures are maintained in accordance with statutory requirements and that the organisation remains financially viable so that it can achieve its strategic objectives.
