The Orthopaedic Technician is a member of the casting team providing support for Fracture and Orthopaedic clinics, Accident and Emergency Department, Theatres, Intensive Care, Wards, and Professionals Allied to Medicine e.g. Physiotherapists, Podiatrists, Hand Therapists in the Bristol Royal Infirmary and Bristol Children’s Hospital, Haematology, Oncology, and all other hospitals within the Trust.
You will be required to work a shift pattern which covers 37.5 hours a week. This will be over a 5-day rota including weekends and bank holidays.
The post holder will provide assistance to trained staff by the effective, prompt, and competent undertaking of delegated duties within the casting room and clinic. You will also understand the principles of casting, wound care, practicing cast & splint application, the safe use of the cast removal system, and work towards becoming a qualified practitioner by studying for the British Orthopaedic Casting Certificate.
Main Duties of the Job
1. To work under close supervision of the trained Band 5 Orthopaedic Practitioner developing casting skills.
2. To undertake work involving specialist skills following satisfactory assessment and competence under the direction of a senior orthopaedic practitioner, including:
* Application of temporary casts
* Application of full casts in Plaster of Paris and Synthetic Casting Tapes
* Application of splints and braces
* Use of the cast removal system
* Accurately record patients' treatment/care plans electronically and in ward and emergency department patient records
* Use the PACS system and develop an understanding of X-ray interpretation
* Basic wound care
* Mobilising patients safely, including the use of walking aids
* Any other skills required subject to training and competency
1. To participate in the assessment, planning, and evaluation of care for the patient who is requiring casting or splinting, referring to the clinician as required.
2. To undertake the training of the casting course after a minimum of training and experience on the job.
