This position, funded by The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, has been established to strengthen the collaboration between The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust and St George’s Hospital as part of the unified Children’s & Young People’s Oncology Centre south of the Thames. The joint centre currently has three specialty doctor posts, each covering McElwain Ward, Daycare, and St George’s Hospital. This new role has been introduced to enhance the specialty doctor rota and provide additional support to the service.
The post holder will be responsible for the day-to-day care of paediatric oncology patients on McElwain Ward and/or Daycare. They may be required to work across both The Royal Marsden (Sutton) and St George’s Hospital sites, ensuring comprehensive coverage and continuity of care. At St George’s Hospital, the post holder will oversee paediatric oncology patients on Pinckney Ward, PICU, and other wards where children may have oncology-related concerns. Their role will be integral in managing inpatient care, liaising with the wider multidisciplinary team, and ensuring optimal patient outcomes. A key requirement for this position is proficiency in performing bone marrow aspirates and administering intrathecal chemotherapy without supervision. This ensures the post holder can independently manage essential procedures within paediatric oncology care. Beyond clinical responsibilities, the post holder will also have a leadership role within the unit. They will supervise and support junior trainees and fellows, acting as a link between trainees and consultants to facilitate seamless communication and patient management. In addition, they will be encouraged to participate in outpatient clinics under consultant supervision, further developing their expertise in paediatric oncology.
