Curator of Rare Books
As a Curator of Rare Books, you will join a small team of specialists responsible for one of the world’s most important collections of early and rare printed books. You will play a central role in the administration and management of these.
Job Description
You will develop expertise in all aspects of rare books collection management. You will support the Section’s academic and professional operations, and the research and teaching of all users of early and rare printed books through:
1. Liaising and engaging with the relevant communities; contributing to research, exhibitions and outreach activities.
2. Managing and developing our early and rare collections.
3. Cataloguing collection material of all dates to appropriate standards, creating specialist cataloguing documentation and training staff across the University.
4. Providing specialist interpretation of collection materials, managing our busy enquiries service and assisting our users.
5. Knowledge of modern rare collections, preferably with a background in book arts and artists books.
Job Requirements
Key responsibilities include acquiring and cataloguing early and rare printed books, leading our busy enquiries service, conducting research into the collections, and contributing to their development and care. You will work on a full range of public engagement activities, including exhibitions, teaching, and training, and communicate the significance of our collections in a way that captures the imagination.
About You
You will be passionate and knowledgeable about early and rare printed books. You will have:
1. Relevant qualifications and experience with rare books from all periods.
2. Experience in cataloguing early and rare books.
3. Strong communication skills to engage with a wide range of audiences.
4. A demonstrable interest in the book arts and modern special collections.
