About the role
Applications are invited for the post of Assistant Professor B (previously Lecturer (B)) in Global Health within the multidisciplinary Department of Global Health and Infection at Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS). Working closely with the existing course lead and other academics, the successful candidate will contribute to the development and delivery of our innovative and expanding Global Health MSc/PGDip/PGCert programme, capitalising on the many opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration with other departments at BSMS and both parent Universities.
The post holder will also contribute to the planning and delivery of undergraduate teaching in Global Health, our Summer School programme, as well as the development and delivery of new online teaching courses for other student and professional groups.
This post will be based in the academic Department of Global Health and Infection, where Global Health teaching and research activities run side-by-side. The Brighton and Sussex Centre for Global Health Research, hosted within the Department, has academic links around the world. Our multidisciplinary research is organised into five main themes: tackling NTDs, Infectious Diseases, HIV and Sexual Health, Culture, Society and Health, and Sustainable Healthcare. The Department contributes widely to teaching and learning at BSMS. The MSc Global health is embedded within this department and the teaching is informed by our research. The postholder will join the department on the education and scholarship track and while they will be able to carry out some research, the role is primarily teaching and the postholder is not expected to lead a research group.
Established in 2010, the Global Health postgraduate programme offers Diploma, Certificate, and Masters courses capitalising on the Department’s diverse expertise, international links and strength in research. Global Health activities extend across disciplines within BSMS more widely including Biomedical Ethics and Humanities, Mental Health and Public Health. Opportunities to collaborate with colleagues from other Schools at both Brighton and Sussex Universities and at the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) are facilitated through the Centre of Excellence in Global Health Research that meets regularly. We also work in partnership with community organisations and non-governmental organisations, many of which are based locally.
About the MSc
The MSc offers an inter-, multi- and cross-disciplinary approach to health and ill-health facilitating students’ critical understanding of current global health issues, their complex determinants and their potential solutions. We combine traditional didactic teaching with dynamic and interactive methods, using case studies alongside evidence and insights from the various disciplines. We also offer a PGDip and PGCert in Global Health alongside the MSc. Within the course, we allow students to develop their specific areas of interest that align to our strengths. For example, we developed the Access to Medicine module and offer pharmacy-related dissertations working closely with the University of Brighton to highlight the role of pharmacists and to develop global health options relevant to pharmacists. Neglected tropical diseases, violence, medical anthropology, health economics and the links between health and development are other areas of strengths we highlight.
