Junior Web Developer & Designer (Remote, UK - 12-Month Fixed Term Contract) Salary Range - £28,500 - £32,000 DOE (potentially more for candidates with very strong experience) We are seeking a Junior Web Developer & Designer to join our creative team on a 12-month fixed-term contract. This is a remote role based in the UK, with the expectation of occasional travel to our Hertfordshire office (at least four times per year, with more frequent visits early on for onboarding and to meet the team). The ideal candidate is a creative problem-solver with front-end development skills, a strong eye for design, and proficiency in Figma. You should be confident presenting design ideas to clients and team members, eager to learn new technologies, and excited to build beautiful, responsive websites in a flexible work environment. Note: While WordPress experience is a plus, we primarily need strong design and front-end coding skills (HTML, CSS, SASS). We are also open to part-time candidates, and working hours are flexible within reason to fit your schedule. Required Skills and Experience Strong Design Skills A solid background in visual/web design with an excellent eye for typography, colour, and layout. You should be able to create modern, clean designs that provide an outstanding user experience. Some proficiency in Figma is essential for designing and prototyping web layouts. Front-End Development Experience Good understanding of HTML, CSS, and basic JavaScript. You can take a Figma design and accurately implement it in code, achieving pixel-perfect fidelity. Familiarity with responsive CSS frameworks or methodologies is a plus. Communication Skills Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. You can articulate your ideas and technical information clearly in writing and speech. This role will involve explaining design concepts or technical details to non-technical team members or clients, so clarity and approachability are key. Portfolio of Live Websites A portfolio of live websites that you have personally designed and built is mandatory. We want to see real examples of your work (for instance, an online portfolio or links to live sites). These could be freelance projects, websites built as part of a previous role, or substantial personal projects. Attention to Detail Commitment to quality and detail in both design and code. You test your work thoroughly and ensure consistency between the approved design and the final website. Problem-Solving Skills Ability to troubleshoot issues (styling glitches, functional bugs, etc.) and find solutions independently. You’re resourceful with online documentation and know how to research answers when encountering new challenges. Communication & Collaboration Since this is a remote role, you must be comfortable working with online collaboration tools (email, Slack, project management apps, video calls). You can clearly articulate design choices and technical concepts, and you’re responsive to feedback from clients or team members. Self-Motivation & Time Management Ability to work remotely effectively—managing your own schedule and meeting deadlines without direct supervision. You thrive in a flexible work setting and stay organised across multiple tasks. Adaptability and Self-Learning Willingness to learn and adapt to new tools or techniques. The web development field changes quickly, and we’re looking for someone who is curious and excited to pick up new skills. Availability for Meet-ups Willingness to travel to our Hertfordshire office roughly 4 times a year. These sessions are for team bonding, project kick-offs, or client meetings. Travel expenses will be covered by the company. UK Work Authorisation Must be based in the UK and legally allowed to work in the UK. We cannot offer visa sponsorship for this role, so you should already have the right to work (e.g., UK/Irish citizen, ILR, or valid work visa for the entire contract duration). Key Responsibilities Design and Develop Websites Create and update web-based projects, including designing page layouts and implementing new features or functionality. While we often work with WordPress, the core requirement is front-end styling. Responsive Front-End Implementation Ensure all websites are fully responsive and user-friendly across devices (mobile, tablet, desktop). You’ll use modern HTML5 and SASS/CSS techniques to build layouts that look great on all screen sizes. Collaboration with Team Work closely with our designers, other developers, and project managers to deliver projects efficiently. You’ll collaborate with UI/UX designers to translate mock-ups into functional websites. Client Interaction Communicate and present your design ideas and development progress to clients. You should be comfortable discussing design choices, gathering feedback, and refining work accordingly. Quality Assurance Test your work across different browsers and devices to ensure consistency, and fix any layout or styling issues. Perform cross-browser testing to ensure the site renders correctly for all users. Troubleshooting Identify and resolve issues or bugs as they arise, whether related to layout, styling, or plugin functionality. You may occasionally adjust PHP code in templates (especially if using WordPress) with help from senior developers when needed.
