The role
As the leader of the Monitoring Analysis Team, you will play a pivotal role in driving innovation and excellence in environmental data analysis within Natural Resources Wales (NRW). Guided by our core values, you will spearhead the delivery of strategic programmes focused on complex and advanced data analysis, synthesis, and optimisation of monitoring networks. Your work will ensure the highest quality analytical outputs, contributing to national reports and key environmental indicators.
In this role, you will lead the development of cutting-edge approaches to data capture and analysis, including advancing NRW's expertise in remote sensing. Collaborating closely with government officials and national stakeholders across Wales and the UK, you will champion the effective use of NRW's environmental data to support informed decision-making.
You will also oversee the management and quality assurance of NRW's water chemistry, water ecology, and fisheries data, as well as the systems where this information is stored. Reporting to the Monitoring and Reporting Manager within the Knowledge and Evidence Department, you will line-manage a team of eight skilled technical professionals, specialising in data analysis, management, and remote sensing.
As an organisation we support flexible working. You will be contracted to the nearest NRW office to your home and a suitable hybrid working pattern will be agreed on appointment. Any regular face to face meetings or training will be planned in advance.

What you will do
* Lead and manage a team of technical specialists undertaking complex programmes of advanced data and evidence analysis to inform NRW's monitoring strategy and programmes, and to provide quality-assured outputs for inclusion in national environmental reports and indicators.
* Be responsible for delivery of the team's workplan, maintaining and monitoring performance against agreed goals and targets.
* Recruit, manage, coach and motivate staff, maintaining an effective and appropriately skilled, and high performing, team.
* Commission, lead, and project manage complex programmes of data analysis, evidence synthesis, and interpretation, working with colleagues across the organisation, and across a broad range of environmental themes.
* Oversee the provision of NRW's end to end expert remote sensing service, with a focus on the application and analysis of satellite imagery.
* Interact with and influence a range of government, agency and partner bodies working on analytical projects relating to monitoring and environmental reporting at Wales, UK and European levels, often taking a lead role.
* Be a specialist lead for data analysis and evidence synthesis, providing expert advice and guidance to staff across the business.
* Lead the development of new and innovative monitoring and analytical methods to drive forward efficiency and improvements to NRW's monitoring and environmental reporting.
* Undertake health and safety duties and responsibilities appropriate to the post

Your qualifications, experience, knowledge and skills
In your application and interview you will be asked to demonstrate the following skills and experience using the STAR method.
1. You will have previous experience of leading and managing teams and complex technical projects.
2. You will have substantial and in-depth technical knowledge and experience in the fields of data analysis, evidence synthesis, and data management, including a sound understanding of statistical methods and use of statistical applications.
3. You will have previous experience of working at national and UK levels managing a portfolio of work programmes related to monitoring and analysis.
4. You will be a confident and skilled communicator with good inter-personal skills.
5. You will have well-developed analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to extract key information and present this in a clear and concise manner to a range of audiences.
Welsh language level requirements
Essential: A1 - Entry level (able to use and understand simple, basic phrases and greetings, no conversational Welsh)
