Wellcome’s Discovery Research programme exists to support the generation of new knowledge that could transform life, health and wellbeing in ways we can't always anticipate today. We fund researchers across fields, disciplines and career stages, in both the UK and Lower-Middle-Income countries. And we're changing how research is done, through improved tools, technologies, methods and research culture. The Discovery Research (DR) team works to manage and develop our portfolio of activities which includes individual researchers and teams supported through our funding schemes, as well as the world-leading institutes and initiatives we support through a more targeted approach. In 2022/23, we spent £955 million on research, across the breadth of our remit. Our funding supports thousands of researchers across the world and part of our role is to find ways to forge partnerships and networks with established and new research and funding communities. We are recruiting to three roles in the newly created Strategy Implementation team within Discovery Research. The Strategy Implementation team will work to support the wider DR team, to ensure strategic alignment and effective operational delivery of DR’s ambitions. The Strategy Implementation team have three broad areas of responsibility: Effective operational management of the DR programme, including wider organisation planning cycles such as delivery planning, budgeting and forecasting. Leading on the ongoing development of, and reporting against, the DR strategy. Initiating agreed routes to monitor, evaluate and learn from our portfolio. The team will collaborate across DR and with colleagues from across Wellcome, including Wellcome’s Strategy department, our Research, Equity, Influencing and Engagement departments, and with Enabling departments such as Research Funding, Finance and Legal. The Senior Project Manager will act as an operational delivery lead for DR, ensuring effective operational management and governance of the DR Programme, through close collaboration with relevant internal business partners. Key areas of responsibility will include processes for forward planning and feeding into organisation-wide delivery planning cycles, decision-making pathways and fora, input into budgeting and forecasting cycles, and risk management. The post holder will manage a team of six, comprising the project management and admin teams within DR. The post holder will work as part of the wider Strategy Implementation team to ensure that DR operations, deliverables and continuous improvement processes align with strategic outcomes for the DR Programme. In this role you will: Lead and manage an integrated programme of activities across the different strands of discovery research which maximises the impact of discovery activities and contributes to the overall success of Research programmes. lead on the strategic development of the different strands of Discovery Research to ensure a high level of integration and ensure close alignment to wider Wellcome ambitions. Lead on the development and implementation of complex internal and external projects including convening stakeholders, developing workshops, major projects and Discovery events. Facilitate multidisciplinary project activities through the flexible deployment of the Discovery Research project team and through leading cross-functional teams across Discovery and wider Wellcome. Introduce and oversee the use of best practice project management tools and techniques to support DR delivery. Contribute to a diverse and inclusive culture across the organisation, collaborating across departments. To be successful in this role you will have: Relevant work experience in academic, industrial, funding agency, or charity settings. Experience managing budgets, headcount, and leading high-performing, inclusive teams. Recognized Project Management qualification. Exceptional interpersonal and team skills, with the capacity to convey complex information clearly and secure stakeholder buy-in.
