The Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) specialist nurse role is an exciting opportunity to work collaboratively with the ERCP lead and endoscopists, coordinating and providing care to address the needs of individuals arising as a consequence of the inpatient and outpatient referrals for ERCP and screening procedures within the Endoscopy setting. This role will act as the patient's advocate, supporting them throughout all stages of the patient journey from pre-assessment to discharge and coordinate health promotion services to improve access to support and information by all sections of society.
Main duties of the job
1. To work within the multidisciplinary team, undertaking caseload management of a specific group of patients, predominantly those requiring an Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP).
2. To coordinate and provide holistic care from the ERCP service to address the needs of individuals arising as a consequence of both medical and surgical referrals.
3. To act as the patients advocate supporting them throughout all stages of the procedure process.
4. The role will provide an interface between medical and nursing disciplines whilst developing and supporting nursing practice.
5. Deliver advanced clinical practice across the Endoscopy specialism through nurse prescribing and nurse led clinics.
6. To promote timely care and transitions between services and hospital Trusts.

Job responsibilities
1. Use specialist nursing skills to access the physical and psycho-social needs of patients within the defined caseload, providing both expert clinical advice to patients and carers and an accessible service, through the continued provision of nurse led inpatient and outpatient services.
2. In partnership with the multidisciplinary team, develop and advise highly specialised programme of care for patients, synthesizing complex information whilst comparing a range of options based on the available evidence/best practice, in order to support and empower patients and their carers to make informed choices. Obtain written informed consent for invasive procedures, within Trust guidelines.
3. To support the provision of telephone helpline services run from the endoscopy departments by resolving queries referred by them by the admin, nursing or Consultant teams.
4. To provide advice, information and support for those making direct contact with the ERCP service.
5. To be responsible for care delivery to patients identified by the referral and vetting process and meet the needs of patients arising as a result of: Being referred to participate in ERCP procedures; Needing to be assessed as fit to undertake ERCP or alternative diagnostic investigations; Having been identified as requiring further intervention, treatment, surveillance follow-up or discharge.
6. The ability to communicate effectively and to disseminate contentious and delicate information appropriately. For example, informing patients that they are likely to have cancer in a sensitive and appropriate manner.
7. Provide advice, education, and support and care to post-transplant patients. Provide ongoing emotional and psychological support to patients and their families.

Qualifications
Essential
1. Registered Nurse Level 1 of the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
Desirable
1. Possession of Independent and Supplementary Prescriber Qualification.
2. Possession of recognised qualification covering physical examination and clinical reasoning.
3. Possession of radiology image requesting competency or willingness to work towards this.
Knowledge and Experience
Essential
1. Extensive post-registration experience, at least substantial experience in Endoscopy.
2. Experience of working with patients with upper GI disease or cancer ideally in an Endoscopy setting.
3. Evidence of having been responsible for day-to-day supervision or coordination of staff in a clinical setting.
4. Demonstrates a history of continuing professional development.
5. Participation in quality assurance, audit, and research.
Desirable
1. Able to contribute to the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of policies/protocols/guidelines relevant to the area of practice.
