Job Specification: Health and Safety Manager (Manufacturing)
Position Overview
The Health and Safety Manager is responsible for overseeing workplace safety and compliance within a manufacturing environment. This role involves developing, implementing, and maintaining health and safety policies, conducting risk assessments, ensuring compliance with legislation, and promoting a culture of safety across the organization.
Key Responsibilities
1. Policy Development and Implementation:
o Develop and implement comprehensive health and safety policies and procedures tailored to the manufacturing environment.
o Regularly review and update safety policies to reflect regulatory changes or workplace developments.
2. Risk Management:
o Conduct regular risk assessments and hazard analyses for machinery, processes, and workspaces.
o Develop mitigation strategies to reduce workplace risks and prevent accidents.
3. Compliance and Reporting:
o Ensure compliance with relevant local, national, and international health and safety regulations.
o Prepare and submit compliance reports to regulatory authorities as required.
4. Training and Development:
o Design and deliver safety training programs for employees, contractors, and management.
o Ensure that staff are knowledgeable about workplace safety practices and emergency procedures.
5. Incident Management:
o Investigate workplace accidents, incidents, and near misses to determine root causes.
o Develop corrective actions and ensure timely implementation to prevent recurrence.
6. Safety Culture Promotion:
o Lead initiatives to promote a culture of safety and wellbeing.
o Collaborate with department heads to integrate safety practices into daily operations.
7. Safety Equipment and Systems Oversight:
o Monitor the maintenance and use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety systems.
o Conduct regular inspections of equipment, facilities, and systems to ensure compliance and functionality.
8. Documentation and Record-Keeping:
o Maintain detailed records of safety inspections, incidents, training sessions, and policy updates.
o Generate regular safety performance reports for senior management.
Required Skills and Qualifications
* Educational Background:
o Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related field.
o Certification in health and safety management (e.g., NEBOSH, OSHA, ISO 45001) preferred.
* Experience:
o Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a health and safety role within a manufacturing or industrial environment.
o Proven track record of improving safety performance and implementing successful initiatives.
* Technical Knowledge:
o Familiarity with manufacturing processes, machinery, and safety requirements.
o Knowledge of safety management systems (e.g., ISO 45001) and regulatory frameworks.
* Soft Skills:
o Strong leadership and interpersonal skills to drive a safety-first culture.
o Excellent communication and training skills to effectively convey safety procedures.
o Analytical and problem-solving abilities to identify risks and develop effective solutions.
* Technology Proficiency:
o Competency with safety management software and Microsoft Office Suite.
o Familiarity with incident reporting tools and data analysis for safety metrics.
