Job summary
We have an exciting opportunity for a Locum Consultant Psychiatrist to work in our Forensic Outreach Service (FOS). The successful candidate will be responsible for the care and treatment of 40-50 community patients living in South-West London. The post holder will also provide clinical leadership to the Criminal Justice Liaison & Diversion Service (courts and police custody) and provide a Forensic Consultancy service to the London Borough of Wandsworth.
There is a well-established multidisciplinary team across the Trust, working collaboratively with other mental health services and the health visiting teams. There are existing networks within South West London, and there are several teaching and training opportunities within the organisation, as well as at St George's Medical School.
Main duties of the job
This Consultant vacancy has arisen due to the resignation of a Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist in the Forensic Service and is short term to cover the recruitment process for a substantive Consultant.
This post is open to both experienced Consultants and suitably experienced Higher Trainees. This role is an excellent opportunity for acting up as a Consultant at the end of the higher specialist training (subject to Deanery approval) for Trainees who want to consider a career in Forensic Psychiatry as the Higher Trainees will be supervised and supported.
The post holder will be working alongside another senior Consultant within the Forensic Outreach Service. The team is driven by delivering excellent clinical care, with several ongoing quality improvement projects and many service development opportunities, within our Trust and across the South London Outreach Services. The post holder will be supported to pursue research as an SPA activity.
The Trust has a comprehensive training scheme for Core and Higher Specialist Trainees and enjoys a close relationship with St George's, University of London, an independent School of the University of London.

Job responsibilities
1. Clinical leadership of and full participation in the multi-disciplinary teams providing forensic mental health services to patients in the community and the Criminal Justice System.
2. The furthering of research, both in terms of personal projects and supervision of junior doctors as required.
3. Responsibility for the professional supervision and management of junior medical staff including one hour's personal supervision weekly of each trainee.
4. The Consultant is expected to maintain Section 12 and AC approval.
5. The Consultant will provide and receive cover for and from consultant colleagues on leave and absence.
6. To be involved with teaching undergraduate medical students, junior doctors, and others as appropriate.
Person Specification
TRAINING & QUALIFICATIONS
Essential
* Primary Medical degree
* Full GMC registration
* Included on the GMC Specialist Register or eligible for such inclusion, within 3 months of the interview.
Desirable
* Recognised professional qualification as a psychiatrist such as MRCPsych
* Specialist Registration as a Forensic or General adult Psychiatrist
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
Essential
* Medication management for complex and often treatment-resistant conditions
* Management of complex multi-source information to develop a formulation and management plan, integrating biological, psychological and social perspectives.
* Physical health assessment and promotion
* Appropriate use of mental health and other legislation
* Use of reflective practice, both for continuous professional development and for team relationships and functioning
Desirable
* Experience of working in the community
* Experience of working in the Criminal Justice System
* Assessment and management of addiction and substance misuse
Ability to enhance specialty of mental health care provided
* Commitment to developing practice through clinical audit
TEACHING
* Approval as a clinical supervisor or eligibility and willingness to gain approval (including undertaking additional training if required)
