Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Breast/Oncology nurse to work at UHSussex, as part of the integrated breast team at University Hospitals Sussex. Saint Richard's Hospital Chichester with some cross-site cover at the Worthing breast unit.
The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) will develop, implement, and evaluate a seamless specialist service ensuring that patients receive the highest standard of clinical care. Contact and care will cover the period from pre-diagnosis, through diagnosis, treatment, follow-up, and survivorship. The CNS will also provide care to patients in the NHS breast screening programme and for those with metastatic disease.
Main duties of the job
1. Engage in complex conversation and dialogue with patients and carers considering learning needs and Mental Capacity using advanced communication skills.
2. Act within a team of key workers for patients to ensure continuity during a highly complex patient pathway/journey.
3. Ensure patients understand what/who the key worker is and their responsibilities.
4. Attend and support sessions for delivery of breaking bad news.
5. Follow an agreed pathway, provide written and verbal information, refer to other professionals, and signpost to other agencies, ensuring liaison and communication with other relevant professionals.
6. Explore and introduce innovative ways of working with the Multi-disciplinary team (MDT) to continuously improve the care of cancer patients within the hospital and community.
7. Work with nurses and AHPs in general ward areas supporting and developing their skills in caring for patients with breast cancer, particularly when communicating often complex, sensitive issues.
Person specification
* Appropriate experience in Breast cancer care
* Evidence of triage and managing competing priorities
* Experience in MDT working
* NMC registration
* Evidence of working within a team
* Evidence of service improvement
