We’re looking for motivated individuals to join our Traction team as Trainee Traction Line Mechanic. This hands-on role involves maintaining and restoring the overhead traction systems that power our electric trains. You’ll work outdoors, often at heights, and gain practical skills while contributing to a safe and reliable rail network.
As part of our Traction Apprenticeship Programme, you’ll complete on-the-job training, attend KiwiRail courses, and study toward the NZ Certificate in Electricity Supply (Traction Line) Level 4.
Your key responsibilities will include:
1. Assisting with installation, maintenance, and repair of overhead traction equipment.
2. Using testing equipment and operating tools safely.
3. Keeping accurate records of your work and learning progress.
4. Prioritising health and safety in all work, aligned with our Zero Harm commitment.
We’re after people who are keen to learn, take pride in their work, and value safety and teamwork. To be successful in this role, you will need:
1. NCEA Level 1 or equivalent.
2. A current full Class 1 driver’s licence.
3. A willingness to complete training and gain your EWRB registration (or already be registered).
4. An interest in electrical or mechanical work.
5. Physical fitness and comfort working at heights and outdoors in various weather.
