Job overview
Responsible for the development, planning, and co-ordination of specialist treatment within the department for endovascular Neurosurgery, Spinal, Stroke, and Neurology patients.
Play a proactive and pivotal role in quality and service development towards 24/7 provision of mechanical thrombectomy for the treatment of ischemic stroke.
Working closely with the multi-disciplinary team, assists in the auditing of clinical standards of care within their clinical area and scope of practice. This includes ensuring a good working environment in which all patients receive a high standard of clinical care.
Carry out specialist Neuro IR nursing procedures.
Provide specialist advice to patients and carers.
Act as nurse in charge in rotation with other band 6s - leading by example, using best practice to support the Neuro IR service. The senior Neuro IR nurse will work with the Neuro IR Lead Nurse, Consultants Interventional Neuro Radiologists, and Neuro Superintendent Radiographer to identify and deliver any training and development required that will enhance patient outcomes, safety, and quality of care.
Deputise for the Neuroradiology lead nurse during periods of leave. This includes acting as a deputy clinical lead and an expert practitioner for the Neuro IR nursing team. For example, liaising, guiding, and advising the multidisciplinary team and external agencies in the provision of optimum patient care.

1. Responsible and accountable for the delivery of patient care in the designated specialist area and to influence practice within the MDT.
2. Provide feedback on good and poor practice to team members ensuring effective role modelling and mentorship to the team.
3. Work effectively as part of a team, be self-motivated, and use own initiative to undertake a wide range of duties relating to specialist area, backed up by professional skills and knowledge.
4. Be highly skilled and competent in the comprehensive assessment of patients using theoretical knowledge and a wide range of experience to assess needs and administer care to support recovery.
5. Devise individual patient-led treatment plans using clinical reasoning, current evidence, and a wide range of treatment skills.

7. Assist Neurovascular specialist nurses in answering patients' enquiries.
8. Offer telephone assistance to patients with queries regarding a recent or upcoming Neuro interventional procedure.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Clinical: Core Nursing/Health Professional Responsibilities
1. Create an environment of continuous quality improvement and professional development, ensuring that the delivery of care is regularly reviewed and that the service developments are implemented when necessary.
2. Provide highly specialist clinical advice and proven expertise to ensure that the best practice is promoted and delivered to reduce the risk to patients, and that the safety of the patient journey is maximised.
3. Work with the Neuro IR lead Nurse to develop training programmes which ensure continual professional development.
4. Demonstrates expert knowledge of contemporary clinical practice and explores new ideas and introduces positive, evidence-based change in line with local and national initiatives.
5. Negotiates or adapts patient care to provide solutions to complex and unusual problems, e.g. infection control outbreak and bed management.
6. Ensures that patient-focused values are fully considered in any service change or development.
7. Undertake Neuro IR nursing procedures in the delivery of patient care pre, during, and post procedure, including scrubbing and circulator duties.
8. Maintain accurate clinical observations of the patient and act accordingly.
9. Have responsibility for the correct administration and custody of medicines according to Trust policy.
10. Act as the patient’s advocate.
11. Ensure compliance with the local delivery of infection control practice as defined by National recommendations and local policies.

Professional registration / Experience/ Qualifications
* Valid NMC PIN
* Registered General Nurse (level 1) Degree level, with significant post-registration experience (specialist or general, depending on requirements of the position). Evidence of post-graduate experience and attendance at specialist courses.
* Experience of supervising junior staff and students. Involvement in carrying out clinical audit including co-ordination, evaluation, and service development. Proven understanding of clinical governance with risk management, its importance and its application. Evidence of continuing professional development.
* Extensive post-graduate experience within the specialist field. Excellent in-depth skills and knowledge base. Experience of working as part of a multi-disciplinary team. Comprehensive understanding of the nature of radiological nursing. Developed knowledge of clinical issues with their implications for radiological practices. Understanding and awareness of IRMER (Ionising Radiation Medical Exposure Regulations) and IRR99 (Ionising Radiation Regulations) and related issues pertaining to nursing staff.
* Proven ability to build and maintain professional relationships with the multi-disciplinary team members. Demonstrate advanced communication skills to support patients and their carers and convey sensitive information, overcoming barriers to communication. Proven ability to deliver training sessions to patients and staff.
