We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Youth Worker to join the Paediatric Play & Youth service at Kings.
You will need a Youth Worker qualification and have experience in working with young people in a youth setting post qualification.
The post holder will work with young people on the paediatric wards to deliver regular group and individual activity sessions. You will use evidence-based practice to assess, plan, and evaluate therapeutic interventions.
The post holder is to work with and support young people to meet their individual needs in managing a hospital admission, providing opportunities to understand and navigate around conditions and issues relating to illness and treatment.
You will advocate to ensure the young person's voice is heard and that they are involved in the decision-making process that affects them to develop independence in health care management and empower them to take responsibility for themselves and develop confidence.
You should have excellent communication skills, requiring a high degree of empathy, understanding, diplomacy, honesty, integrity, and sensitivity. You will need to have experience of working well within a multi-disciplinary team, maintaining confidentiality throughout. You must be able to accurately document all patient interventions on the patient's electronic notes.
You will need an understanding of the differing needs of patients with additional and special needs.

Job responsibilities
1. To create an environment appropriate to having regard for young people's physical, psychological, and social well-being and their family.
2. To assess, implement, and evaluate recreational programmes of individual young people including the occasional external social activity when funding allows.
3. To liaise with other members of the healthcare team in the management of the adolescent and their family in the hospital and the community.
4. To ensure specific documented goal-oriented therapeutic and recreational games are carried out.
5. To involve the family and the multidisciplinary team where appropriate in the young person's recreation activities/programme.
6. To offer professional advice and support on youth-related matters.
7. To provide the appropriate remedial recreation to aid recovery, helping the young person to gain confidence, independence, and self-esteem.
8. To have knowledge and an understanding and awareness of the special needs of the young person with a medical condition.
9. To select/recommend appropriate recreational material to meet the needs of the identified patient group.
10. To manage resources within agreed limits.
11. To liaise and work effectively with other members of the multidisciplinary team, particularly other youth teams, health play specialists, school teachers, nurses, and psychologists.
12. To liaise and co-operate with the Play Coordinator/Health Play Specialists on a regular basis to share information about patient-related and relevant issues.
13. To be aware of health and safety policy and the impact on aspects of the adolescent service.
14. To demonstrate knowledge of child protection policies and procedures and the ability to protect children from harm.
15. To demonstrate effective time management to meet the service's needs.
16. To maintain records of activity and provide reports as required.
17. To support activity to raise the profile of the post and the Variety Children's Hospital.
18. To report promptly to the appropriate ward manager/nurse in charge, any relevant information concerning the well-being of the young person.
19. To be responsible for mentoring/supervising students.
Person Specification
Qualification and experience
* Registered Youth Work degree or equivalent Professional Qualification/Health Play Specialist Foundation Degree with Youth Work experience.
* Evidence of continued professional development.
* Knowledge in providing the appropriate remedial recreation to aid recovery, helping the young person to gain confidence, independence, and self-esteem.
* Ability to work with and provide a service and environment appropriate to having regard for the young person's physical, psychological, and social effects on the young person and their family.
* Experience of working with young people with long-term health conditions and their families.
* Evidence of contribution to policy and practice changes e.g., arising from audits or audits/complaints.

This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.
Salary: £35,964 to £43,780 per annum including HCA.
