Job Description: Practice Nurse

An experienced Practice Nurse is sought to provide and maintain a high standard of nursing care for patients, as well as to assist doctors and other members of the healthcare team. Working alongside other team members, the Practice Nurse will support activities required under the framework of general practice, the treatment room, and the nursing competency matrix. Experience in childhood immunisations, cervical screening, complex wound care, and spirometry is desirable.
Main Duties of the Job:
1. Assist in and perform routine tasks related to patient care as directed by the Lead Nurse and GPs.
2. Maintain good practice with regard to prescribing, if qualified.
3. Adhere to practice policy for audits and reviews of clinical practice.
4. Assist GPs with minor surgery and coil fittings, if required.
5. Conduct cervical smears, pregnancy tests, and provide contraceptive advice.
6. Engage in chronic disease management, where appropriate to skills.
7. Administer routine influenza, pneumococcal, shingles vaccinations, etc.
8. Provide infant immunisation and vaccinations.
9. Offer travel health care advice and immunisations.
10. Perform ECGs.
11. Provide wound care and ulcer care.
12. Remove sutures.
13. Conduct venepuncture and urinalysis.
14. Review and understand/action pathology tests, such as urine culture and swabs, where appropriate.
15. Chaperone and assist patients being examined by other clinicians, when necessary.
16. Maintain housekeeping duties, including the general tidiness and cleanliness of nursing and treatment rooms.
17. Ensure accurate record-keeping.
18. Order drugs and stock, as well as vaccinations, to maintain stock levels where required.
19. Ensure all health and safety requirements and infection control measures are met, reporting any issues to the nurse manager.
20. Cooperate with annual appraisal meetings and maintain a written professional development plan, as well as an up-to-date portfolio that meets registration requirements with the UKCC.
21. Maintain registration with the NMC.
22. Work in accordance with the UKCC Code of Conduct and within the scope of professional practice.
