Our client, University of Southampton Science Park (USSP) is a wholly owned subsidiary of the University of Southampton, operating at arms length from the University. They run on a fully commercial basis, managing and developing the Science Park in line with the enterprise and economic growth agenda of the University.
USSP are now looking for a passionate and highly organised Coffee Shop Assistant Manager to join their team at the University of Science Park. You will be responsible for the operation of the two Fusion coffee shops and for the meeting rooms and provision of catering to events and meetings. You will also take care of the management and development of the Catering team.
Coffee Shop Assistant Manager, the role:
Using flexible pool of staff to fully cover all catering services
Analysing competitors to ensure offerings and prices remain competitive
Invoicing and dealing with invoicing queries
Dealing with any complaints or operational issues as they occur
General support and other duties as required
Maternity cover duties, starting May 2025:
Looking after profit and loss of all conferencing and catering services and ensuring effective budgeting, cost control and pricing
Forecasting revenue, reporting sales and handling pricing strategies
Managing all catering staff and their recruitment (as and if needed)
Marketing and promoting the conferencing and catering services in association with USSPs marketing agents
Coffee Shop Assistant Manager, the person:
Previous, solid experience in a similar role - managing food and beverage outlets and conferencing operations (including stock control, scheduling, and compliance with health and safety standards)
In-depth understanding of menu planning, food trends, and quality standards
Knowledge of coffee preparation, barista techniques, and catering best practices
Proven ability to lead, motivate, and develop diverse teams across multiple locations
Focused on delivering exceptional customer experience
Strong problem-solving skills and ability to multitask and prioritise
Familiar with promoting services to attract new clients and maximise bookings
Outstanding written and verbal communications skills and strong attention to detail
Ability to build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders and partners
Understanding of event scheduling software and food safety compliance systems
Desirable:
Relevant certifications (eg Food Safety Level 3, HACCP training or equivalent)
Point-of-sale (POS) systems, catering management software, and Microsoft Office Suite
Previous team management experience
