Job Title: Outdoor Education Instructor
Reports to: Wider Curriculum Lead
Contract Type: Full time, permanent
Location: Bishops Stortford
Main Purpose of Outdoor Education

Duties and Responsibilities
Set high expectations which inspire, motivate and challenge pupils by:
* Establishing a safe and stimulating environment for pupils, ingrained in mutual respect

Promote good progress and outcomes by pupils by:
* Being accountable for the attainment, progress, and outcomes of the pupils you teach
* Planning your teaching to build on pupils’ capabilities and prior knowledge
* Guiding pupils to reflect on their progress and emerging needs
* Reporting and recording pupil’s attainment and progress
Demonstrate good subject and curriculum knowledge by:
* Having knowledge of different areas covered in outdoor education
* Demonstrating a critical understanding of developments in the subject and curriculum areas
* Promoting good standards of literacy and the correct use of standard English
Plan and teach well-structured lessons by:
* Imparting knowledge and developing understanding through effective use of each session
* Promoting a love of learning
* Reflecting systematically on the effectiveness of sessions
* Contributing to the design of an engaging curriculum
* Ensuring the health and safety of all participants, including writing and maintaining risk assessments
* Regularly checking and maintaining outdoor education equipment
Adapt teaching to respond to the strengths and needs of all pupils by:
* Knowing when and how to differentiate appropriately
* Setting clear learning objectives and planning accordingly
* Updating Individual Learning Programmes
* Understanding factors that can inhibit learning and implementing strategies to overcome these
Make accurate and productive use of assessment by:
* Marking, assessing, and providing feedback on pupils’ work
* Using formative and summative assessment to secure pupils’ progress
* Monitoring progress and setting targets
* Encouraging pupils to respond to feedback
Manage behaviour effectively to ensure a good and safe learning environment by:
* Establishing clear rules and routines for behaviour
* Maintaining high expectations of behaviour
* Leading by example and maintaining good relationships with pupils
Professional development and performance appraisal:
* Attending all CPD days and training as required
* Reviewing own professional development
* Participating in the school’s performance appraisal programme
* Being open to coaching and mentoring
Fulfil wider professional responsibilities by:
* Contributing positively to the school’s ethos
* Developing effective professional relationships with colleagues
* Communicating effectively with parents
* Using school systems efficiently

Person Specification
Qualifications
* Relevant qualifications in certain activities (paddle sports, climbing, archery, etc.) or willingness to undertake training
* A good undergraduate degree in chosen subject (Desirable)
Experience
* Experience in working with pupils who have SEMH
* Experience in the outdoor education sector
