Purpose of the role:
Working at a neighbourhood level to build confident, more connected communities. Listening to local people and helping them develop what they want in their community, improving links between people, local groups, and initiatives in the community and enabling increased community activity.
Uncovering the key community assets and skills of local people who can begin to shape change and influence outcomes in their area, through the strengths-based approach of Asset Based Community Development.
Key Responsibilities for Community Builder:
Map and maintain awareness of formal and informal community activity and provision, sharing this information locally to promote increased participation.
Find the natural ‘Connectors’ in the community, provide opportunities for them to meet and exchange stories, develop action groups and support the mapping of community assets.
Provide appropriate support and access to training for ‘Connectors’, individually and in groups, to ensure they have the right skills to facilitate community conversations and to promote events/activities.
Support motivated individuals to transform ideas into action for the benefit of themselves and others, exploring what support they want/need and seeking out organisations or individuals who can provide the identified learning and development.
Support the development of a ‘Community Association’ that drives opportunities and empowers local people and community organisations to share ideas, learn and co-design or take the lead on the development of activities within the local area.
Organise and facilitate community events to share ideas, encourage collective decision-making, build a sense of belonging, enable ongoing neighbourhood planning and the emergence of broader themes for community development.
Develop insight into power dynamics within a community and support people to understand, manage and challenge these, where necessary.
Maintain awareness of City, County and other initiatives and developments that present opportunities for community members to be more engaged and have influence over what happens in their communities.
Encourage participation in such initiatives and/or enable community members to co-design their own initiatives. Liaise with other organisations, staff, and partners to build relationships, raise awareness and understanding of the importance of working alongside and empowering communities.
Capture and share learning and key findings regularly with funders and any other programme partners and to champion the ABCD model in your role and across the organisation.
Learn from the co-design process and implementation to inform changes in practice, where necessary.
Work confidently alone and with other Community Builders in the district to ensure successful delivery of projects and increasing learning opportunities.
Actively collect evidence of outputs and outcomes, ensuring consistent implementation of monitoring & evaluation. Including keeping written records, recording case studies and stories as appropriate.
Work with diverse communities across the local area and ensure effective understanding of local aspirations.
Maintain personal and professional development to meet the changing demands of the job, participating in appropriate training and development activities.
Skills and experience needed for the Community Builder:
Experience- essential
Educated to GCSE level or equivalent
Ability to communicate with a wide range of organisations and individuals, confident in starting new conversations and building relationships
IT skills including Microsoft office programmes, Outlook and Teams
Ability to create case studies and provide written evaluations of work
Able to act in a professional manner and with integrity at all times, understanding and adhering to professional boundaries
Able to challenge inappropriate behaviour sensitively and diplomatically
Previous experience of working with communities and supporting community projects, including paid work or volunteering
Experience of working collaboratively with organisations, community groups, volunteers and local people
Reliable and self-motivated, ability to work independently and without close supervision
Discretion and confidentiality combined with sensitivity and diplomacy
Passion for developing communities and individuals
Able to work occasional evenings & weekends if required
Access to transport and the ability to travel across the city or county
Flexible approach to work including lone working or as part of a team
Experience – desirable
Previous experience in, or knowledge of Asset Based Community Development (ABCD) working practices or ethos
Knowledge of Worcester Community Trust and the activities it undertakes
Understanding and experience of monitoring and evaluation of data
Ability to encourage and capture ‘story telling’ through different mediums
Experience of marketing using different types of social media.
Experience of working with communities facing disengagement with local services or experiencing levels of deprivation and additional barriers to making decisions about their community.
Previous experience of community development and supporting volunteers
Current funding for this role is until January 2027, with the potential to extend if we are successful in obtaining further funding.
