The primary focus of this role is to deliver exceptional service to members by managing and expanding existing accounts, renewing sector memberships, and driving business growth within the sector—all while staying aligned with our strategic goals and risk appetite. As an Underwriter, you’ll play a key role in collaborating with loss prevention teams to pinpoint emerging risks, as well as working closely with claims to review contracts, ensure robust coverage for our members, and identify areas where additional protection may be needed. This is a dynamic, hands-on position where you’ll be instrumental in shaping the future of our sector’s offerings.
What will you be doing?
Key responsibilities will include:
* Underwriting and renewal of all accounts within the sector under the overall direction of the head of underwriting, Offshore & Renewables.
* The analysis of underwriting, claims and loss prevention trends within the sector.
* Identifying and developing new business for the division.
* Identifying and supporting team pressure points and to arrange workloads accordingly.
* Promotion of the club and developing lasting long-term relationships with existing and potential Members, Brokers and Shipping industry contacts.
* Receiving enquiries, information and carrying out additional research using available information from internal and external sources.
* Evaluation of enquiries, producing quotations or declining to quote in line with strategy and risk appetite.
* Ensuring Contract Review service is maintained. The review process allows us to confirm the extent to which cover is available, with the aim of providing our members with certainty as to the scope of cover in relation to the specific contract and for us to ensure we have sufficient reinsurance in place for a particular risk.
* Identify and respond to loss prevention concerns across the Sector, in conjunction with the loss prevention teams.
* Share best practice and information relevant to supporting Members/customers and providing them with excellent service.
* Working with deputy underwriters and underwriting assistants so ensure the prompt and accurate production and processing of entry documentation and debiting.
About you
Skills/Qualifications/Experience
* Either significant experience of underwriting P&I or equivalent in-house experience within industry.
* Strong technical underwriting skills.
* A good knowledge of marine insurance, in particular P&I cover.
* Evidence of ‘owning’ Member and/or customer relationships and high performance in relationship management.
* Evidence of ability to work positively as a team and to empower colleagues.
* Efficient & effective administration skills, demonstrating an attention to detail concerning work produced. Highly proactive: the ability to lead by example.
* Self-motivated and able to work on own initiative.
* Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to demonstrate sound written and verbal communication skills.
