An exciting opportunity has arisen within Health and Justice Services for a Speech and Language therapist to work within HMP Millsike Integrated Mental Health Team, a brand new Category C men's prison, located in the village of Full Sutton near York.
The service provides assessment and treatment for people who are within the prison setting.
HMP Millsike will have an operational capacity of 1500 people who will spend their sentences learning the skills they need to find work on release as part of the government's drive to cut reoffending. The prison site is currently under construction and Tees Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust were recently awarded the Mental Health Service contract to begin delivering services in April 2025.
The working base is flexible between HMP Millsike and HMP Full Sutton.
The post holder will be part of a dynamic SLT service in TEWV, with well defined peer support, supervision systems and CPD opportunities and be part of the growing and supportive Health and Justice SLT team.
The post holder will have a degree in Speech and Language Therapy and have significant experience in Speech and Language Therapy including experience working with service users in mental health or learning disabilities with complex needs.
The post will be subject to Prison vetting.
Main duties of the job
1. The SLT will be responsible for providing assessment and intervention with individuals with speech, language and communication needs/swallowing.
2. To work as an integral part of the Prison Mental Health team.
3. You will be part of a friendly and supportive wider Health and Justice SLT team who work into a range of prisons.
4. To work with individuals and their supporters by providing communication advice and strategies in relevant format.
5. To raise awareness and improve the workforce's knowledge and skills in SLC needs.
6. To provide relevant and meaningful therapy input where appropriate.
Objectives:
1. To provide an exemplary and comprehensive assessment of SLCN for all eligible referred individuals.
2. To work as an integrated multi-disciplinary team.
3. To operate within a robust clinical operating framework.
4. To provide high quality advice to key agencies and Prison teams including mental health, staff, Prisoner Officers, Alcohol and Drug Recovery agencies, Education and Employment services and Probation.

Qualifications
* Qualified SLT with valid UK licence
* HCPC registration
* Significant experience working with people with mental health/neurodivergence
* Experience of developing and delivering training
* Experience of working with people with complex presentations
* Experience of MDT working
* Evidence of post graduate learning/experience in dysphagia management
* Registration with RCSLT
* Experience of working within prison or criminal justice setting
* Experience of working with people whose behaviour can challenge services
* Completed recognised clinical supervisors training or willingness to achieve
* Relevant training e.g. autism approaches, talking mats, trauma informed
