Development Manager, Aerospace

The Development Manager will serve as a lead mechanical engineer within the Advanced Technology Solutions (ATS) team in Air Liquide’s Global Markets and Technologies (GM&T) group. ATS is a multi-mission, critical technical resource to the gas separation membrane business area within Air Liquide. Missions of the ATS team include new product development, new process development, manufacturing support and troubleshooting, sales and business development support, and R&D collaboration and industrialization of technology (TRL maturation). The Development Manager will have particular emphasis on projects related to Aerospace markets and opportunities, and will be responsible for growing and leading a team of 3-4 mechanical engineers and technicians. The Development Manager will provide strong engineering leadership and rigor throughout their day-to-day activities. The Development Manager will be responsible for leading the development and optimization of new and existing products, adapting new product designs to existing manufacturing processes, fixtures, fittings, equipment, vessels, etc., providing customer support regarding design issues, supporting manufacturing processes at ALaS Newport, and providing support and expertise to the R&D team at Air Liquide’s Innovation Campus Delaware (ICD).
Responsibilities
* Perform product design, development and test, including associated CAD support, numerical analysis support, report writing, and data analysis.
* Perform ideation for new products, aid in portfolio management, and use Stage-Gate processes to develop new products.
* Design and review pressure vessel requirements for Aerospace and industrial applications (e.g., ASME Section VIII).
* Manage individual product development projects and lead integrated product teams.
* Provide day-to-day technical leadership and overall ‘people management’ of a small team (3-4 direct reports).
* Provide continuous improvement suggestions for enhancement of processes, methods, and culture for ALaS, to support and enhance growth of the business (particularly in engineering processes), and lead change activities.
* Interact with Commercial teams to provide support in addressing customer issues related to system functionality.
* Provide support to the Manufacturing Group for issues related to production equipment and bundle fabrication.
* Assist in integrating existing and new bundle designs into manufactured systems.
* Interact with R&D group to provide support to their programs and help coordinate their support of Air Liquide Advanced Separations’ programs.
* Interact with GM&T business leadership and customers in support of business growth in key markets.
Requirements
* B.S. in Mechanical Engineering.
* 6+ years experience in mechanical design in a product development and manufacturing environment.
* 2-3 years people management experience.
* Aerospace programs experience, customer requirements, and expectations.
* Experience managing & performing product development (preferably using Stage-Gate).
* 3D CAD capability for complex mechanical components (SolidWorks or equivalent).
* Familiarity with ISO 9001 requirements.
* US Citizen and/or Green Card holder.
Preferred
* Finite Element Analysis skills for 3D structural analysis (SolidWorks, ANSYS, or equivalent).
* Polymeric membrane experience.
* Experience with ASME Section VIII pressure vessel specifications and code.
* Experience with polymeric materials and manufacturing techniques.
* Experience with standard & CNC manufacturing equipment.
* Critical thinking, problem solving, data organization, and analysis skills.
* Strong written and verbal communication skills.
* Demonstrated innovation results (ideation, development, and implementation).
* Ability to obtain results with globally, culturally and functionally diverse populations.
* Six Sigma training.
* Experience leading and/or participation in RCCA teams.
* Experience with AS9100 requirements.
Salary Information
* Salary range for this position in Newport, DE - $140K - $155K with an additional annual target incentive of 14% based on performance.
