Priestner's Unit (PICU) is an 8-bed unit with beds allocated for female patients. The unit is based at the State of the Art Atherleigh Park Hospital, which opened in 2017 when the unit was relocated from its previous site at Leigh Infirmary. The Unit benefits from individual en-suite rooms for all patients. There is a separate MDT room for morning meetings and reviews.
Priestner's Unit receives referrals both from within and outside the trust. There is a pathway in place for accepting patients onto the unit, and the decision is made in MDT. It is expected that the consultant will provide input in these MDT meetings. There is a pathway in place for patients to step down depending on their clinical need. The ward utilises the recovery pathway and self-harm pathway. MDT works towards a PBS model of care for all patients.
Priestner's Unit is an award-winning unit for managing challenging behaviour (the APT awards of excellence). The Unit is accredited by QNPICU and works alongside the national standards of PICU.
