The Infection Nurse Specialist Team is looking to recruit a RGN to join the team as a Band 6 in providing clinical care and treatment of patients with Infection who meet Early discharge criteria on referral to Outpatient Parental Antimicrobial Team (OPAT).
Minimum Requirements:
1. Applicants must be experienced Band 5 / Band 6 Nurses and must be up to date (update completed) and currently practicing relevant clinical skills on Venepuncture, Cannulation, and ANTT.
2. Obtaining Blood cultures, accessing PICC or Midlines are essentials, and ABG, blood culture, Clinical Diagnostics and Examination are desirable.
Applicants should have good interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to communicate sensitive information to patients and relatives where there may be barriers to communication or when reassurance is required.
All applicants should have a good understanding of Sepsis and antimicrobial stewardship as a preference, but this is not essential. Having good educational presentation skills is desirable.
Working Hours: Current working hours are 8-10hr shifts between the hours of 8am – 6pm Monday – Friday. Please note this is a temporary working pattern and subject to change in accordance with the demands of the service; the service will become a 7-day working service in the near future.
Cross-site working may be expected.
Key Responsibilities:
1. To work alongside the Infection Team on guidance for clinical teams in the area of OPAT, including education.
2. To provide nursing input into the early discharge of patients on referral to OPAT from ward teams and prevention of admission from Primary care.
3. To provide initial assessment of patient needs after referral to OPAT.
4. Be confident in the use of intravenous access.
5. Promote Antimicrobial stewardship.
6. To involve patients and carers/relatives in the development of services.
7. To collect and analyze relevant data in conjunction with the Clinical lead for Infection.
8. To liaise with outside health care agencies as necessary.
9. To liaise with clinical staff in other areas of healthcare to ensure a seamless service.
10. To review national/local documents and advise on their impact on legislation.
11. To provide readily available information to staff and act as a specialist advisor in all matters relating to OPAT, where specific medical advice is not required.
12. To advise contracting departments, participating in the preparation of documents relating to service specifications and quality standards.
13. To take necessary action to ensure the safety and welfare of staff, patients, and visitors in compliance with current Health and Safety.
14. To use IT skills to input into MS Office applications and specific Infection programmes to ensure the effective communication and storage of patient information relating to OPAT.
Liaison/Advice:
1. To provide advice, information, and support to the Quality and Governance.
2. To provide advice regarding risk management, Standards for better Health, and other Department of Health guidance.
Personal and Professional Development:
1. To work with colleagues to continuously improve service and support own personal development through clinical supervision or other agreed formal methods.
2. To represent the Trust in this specialized field of nursing at professional meetings and conferences.
3. To keep informed of current research, developments, and statutory provisions and disseminate information as appropriate.
