Design and Development Engineer
As a key member of the Design and Development Engineering team, reporting to the Head of Product Design and Development, you will be responsible for the design of new products and maintenance of existing product portfolios. By engaging with Customer Services and Customers to understand their real and perceived needs, and working in collaboration with other Unipart teams, you will drive the LED Signalling Product Technology roadmap and support continued business growth. You will be based at the Southport site but work cross functionally with the Engineering team across the Division. A blended / hybrid working arrangement is available for this role.
Main Responsibilities:
1. Create innovative solutions to complex design issues as part of the product definition and design cycle
2. In-depth knowledge and experience of PCB design, layout and manufacture
3. Conduct product safety analysis to SIL 3 as required
4. Develop electronic product and component designs using both analogue and digital electronic design as well as possessing an excellent knowledge of embedded software (PIC and C).
5. Produce general LED PCB layouts and schematics
6. Work in collaboration with engineers across the application development and engineering teams (mechanical and electronics engineers) to produce cost-effective, reliable design solutions
7. Work within the New Product Development (NPD) gated process to successfully deliver products to the right specification and timeframes ensuring complete customer satisfaction
8. Undertake modifications to existing products in line with customer requests through the Engineering Change Request (ECR) process
9. Prepare cost and schedule estimates giving appropriate consideration to technical risks
10. Perform qualification testing of products and validation and produce test equipment specifications
11. Undertake tasks in accordance with the engineering key performance indicators (quality, cost and delivery)
12. Create, update and control technical drawings and documentation
13. Strong design review and document checking abilities
14. Demonstrate a full understanding of Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Reliability (PFMEA, RAMS, Gauge R&R) processes
15. Design concepts and undertake preparatory work for new product development
16. Attend customer meetings (internally and externally) as required
17. Liaise with procurement and external suppliers for tooling, component and sub-assembly requirements
18. Lead and contribute towards engineering projects as required using appropriate project management tools and Engineering trackers and gate processes
19. Embrace the Unipart Way suite of lean tools and techniques to support day to day operations and monitoring of KPI’s
20. Work in a safe manner, taking reasonable care for the health and safety of yourself and other people at work, following appropriate Health and Safety guidance, training and company rules and procedures as appropriate.
Essential criteria:
1. Degree (or equivalent experience) in Electronics Engineering
2. Expertise in both analogue and digital electronic design as well as possessing an excellent knowledge of embedded software (PIC and C).
3. Working knowledge of Engineering design systems (Autocad / Cadstar / eCadstar) and design rules
4. Experience in product design lifecycle – from concept to introduction into manufacturing (ideally in a safety critical industry)
5. Experience in component obsolescence management
6. Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
7. Able to liaise with customers to understand technical requirements
8. Strong customer focus
9. Passion for producing innovative design solutions
Desirable criteria:
1. Experience / knowledge of rail industry standards, SMD LED technology / optical design
2. Product safety knowledge EN 50128, EN 50129
3. Project Management Experience highly desirable
