Product Engineering at JLR is centred on innovation and creativity. From advanced driver assistance systems to developing the future of electric propulsion, the opportunities to create exceptional experiences for the future of motoring are wide-ranging. You'll work alongside industry experts to drive product strategy, manage programs, analyse performance, and lead transformation initiatives. Exceptional careers that bring world-renowned vehicles to life start here.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Come and join JLR as a Lead Engineer - Battery Housing Thermal & Pressure SME.
This engineering role is within the product development team, focusing on batteries for Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV). The team designs all in-house enclosures for the batteries, including the frame, lid, sealing and venting systems. A key aspect of the role involves designing solutions to manage pressure and thermal conditions during cell venting to ensure pack safety requirements are met.
The role requires a deep understanding of the standards, requirements, and core principles of engineering related to battery enclosures. This includes developing expertise in pressure and thermal management to ensure the battery systems operate safely and effectively. Based primarily at Gaydon, the Pressure and Thermal Subject Matter Expert (SME) will work with various project teams and the battery and body technical specialist community. There may occasionally be a need to work at other JLR locations, and a part-time role could be negotiated for the right candidate.
Key Accountabilities And Responsibilities
1. Lead ambient and emergency pressure equalisation strategy and support deployment
2. Support strategy for battery thermal management during cell venting and deploy the strategy within the enclosures commodity
3. Liaise with internal stakeholders, including HV Battery, Structures, EDU, and Vehicle engineering teams, to agree optimised solutions and develop feasible series production solutions with JLR manufacturing teams
4. Develop and document design rules, standards, and requirements that support pressure and thermal management strategies, and define and cascade component-level requirements based on system-level strategy
5. Develop and support subsystem level testing to build a body of knowledge and cascade mandatory test cases for future programmes in virtual and physical environments
Knowledge, Experiences And Skillsets
1. Proficiency in Thermo Fluids: Demonstrated proficiency in thermo fluids, including principles and applications related to heat transfer and fluid dynamics
2. Battery Systems Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of battery systems, particularly in cell venting and safety management, with a focus on the battery enclosure rather than the cells
3. Sealing Systems Expertise: Experience in designing and implementing sealing systems for battery enclosures, ensuring they are watertight, dustproof, and capable of containing hot gases during cell venting
4. APED & EPED Experience: Experience with ambient pressure equalisation devices (APED) and emergency pressure equalisation devices (EPED), including knowledge of breathers and burst disks
5. Logical and Methodical Approach: The successful candidate should demonstrate a logical and methodical approach to component applications, verification, and validation, and be able to direct the work of others
