An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Head Gardener to assist in the restoration and continued development of the charming gardens and grounds on a picturesque, private estate near Haslemere, West Sussex. The original gardens were laid out in the mid 1900’s and, after a long period of neglect, are now being restored by the property owners who are keen gardeners and will be involved in the project.
The property is set in 8 acres of gardens which will comprise of a modest kitchen garden with a greenhouse, three orchards, a variety of mature trees, lawns, formal gardens around and stretching in front of the house, and ornamental ponds. Beyond the gardens, the wider estate is a further 25 acres and includes lakes, fields and paddocks, as well as some ancient woodland, where the Head Gardener may be asked to provide assistance on occasion.
The Head Gardener will be working collaboratively, alongside the property owners (and a junior gardener yet to be appointed), to bring the project to life, with initial input from the existing professional garden designer. This is a fantastic opportunity to put your creative stamp on a truly wonderful estate, including the design, implementation and rejuvenation of planting schemes throughout the gardens.
The Head Gardener should have extensive experience of working on projects in a similar setting, as well as some design capabilities. Excellent plant knowledge is desired with a good understanding of specialist pruning, propagation and kitchen gardening including the production of vegetables and cut flowers. They will be expected to have good knowledge and experience of sustainable gardening methods such as composting, and try to work as organically as possible, with limited use of chemicals. Applicants should be physically fit and comfortable working outdoors in all weathers.
It is required that the Head Gardener will have a good understanding of the use and maintenance of a variety of machinery including, but not limited to, ride-on mowers, quad bikes and chippers. A driving license is essential and PA1/6 Spraying, and chainsaw certificates would be advantageous. An enhanced DBS check will be required for the role.
This is a full-time salaried position, Monday to Friday, with paid breaks and lunch. There will be occasional requirements for overtime, which can be taken back as time in lieu at times to be agreed. The holiday allowance for the position is 20 days plus bank holidays, which must include Christmas, plus two half days per year for medical appointments.
