Interim Local Government Contract Lawyer

Pay Rate: up to £38.72 per hour PAYE max
Hours per week: 37 Monday – Friday, 08:30 - 17:00
Role Length: This opening assignment is for 3 months

WFH: occasional office attendance may be required, particularly when completing contracts.
We are seeking an experienced Local Government Contract Lawyer to join the team. This individual will play a critical role in providing legal support and advice to ensure the successful delivery of key commercial projects for the Council. You will be responsible for offering expert legal counsel on complex matters and will work closely with the Head of Service and Senior Legal Officers.
The ideal candidate must have the ability to work independently with minimal supervision. You will be an essential contributor to the legal services team, helping to navigate and resolve intricate legal issues in a local government context.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Provide expert legal advice on complex commercial contracts and public law issues to ensure compliance with statutory requirements.
2. Draft, review, and negotiate a range of government contracts, ensuring that they align with legal standards and Council objectives.
3. Collaborate with the Head of Service and other senior officers on high-priority legal matters, offering insight into complex issues and strategies.
4. Ensure the smooth delivery of key commercial projects by providing timely and accurate legal advice, addressing risks and legal challenges as they arise.
5. Manage a caseload with minimal supervision, demonstrating the ability to work autonomously while maintaining high legal standards.
6. Assess and mitigate legal risks associated with local government contracts, ensuring compliance with regulations and best practices.
7. Attend the office when required to finalize contracts and collaborate with colleagues on key legal matters.
Key requirements:
1. Qualified and admitted as a Solicitor, or called as a Barrister or CILEx Lawyer.
2. Significant knowledge and experience of Contract and Commercial matters and a good understanding of complimentary law.
3. Knowledge and understanding of Local Government Law, the legislative framework within Local Government and issues relevant to the service responsibilities.
4. Thorough understanding of current Procurement legislation and subsidy legislation.
5. Good understanding of construction contracts (NEC/JCT).
6. Substantial post qualification experience.
7. Considerable previous experience advising on significant commercial projects.
8. High standard of drafting, negotiating, presentation, communication and personal organisation skills.
