Job overview
We are seeking to recruit a Data Scientist, who will deliver impactful analytical products as part of an analytical service to the Trust’s clinicians and operational staff. This is a Fixed Term position until 31st December 2025, current ESNEFT employees will be offered on a secondment basis.
You will be part of the Business Informatics Team who focus on providing analysis to help the Trust become an insight-driven organisation and to enable it to self-serve its data needs.
We are looking for a data scientist with strong technical skills in managing data and working with data warehouse environments, developing business intelligence products (including interactive visual reports), data modelling, and producing analysis using statistical software (e.g. R and Python).
The Data Scientist will use their technical skills to implement statistical analysis, develop simulation models, data visualisation, and automated reporting solutions. Previous experience of the NHS is desirable but not essential. However, you will be highly numerate, an excellent problem solver, a logical thinker, and comfortable communicating analysis.
We welcome applications from students finishing or in the process of finishing their Master in Data Analysis/Data Science or similar discipline.
Main duties of the job
* You will work with the Head of Analytics to provide analysis of complex data sets, developing specialist analytics skills to min, analyse and model data to provide specialist advice to the wider Trust and develop the Business Informatics Team’s data science capabilities.
* You will provide a specialist analytics business intelligence function to operational and clinical colleagues across the Trust, producing analysis and visual reports that meets the analytical needs of end users of Trust data, communicating analysis with clarity and impact.
* You will provide specialist knowledge and practice skills in the implementation of analytical techniques (including statistical analysis, predictive modelling and forecasting, and mining of data) to support Business Informatics colleagues deliver an effective business intelligence function to the Trust.

Person specification
Qualifications
* Educated to masters level or equivalent experience in a numerical subject, such as Maths, Physics, Economics, Operational Research, Statistics or Social Research.
* Knowledge of a range of statistical/numerical techniques, procedures acquired through qualification to degree level, or equivalent relevant experience.
* Further training in analytics and statistical analysis where relevant
* Evidence of continued professional development
Experience
* Use of statistics software, including R and/or Python.
* Experience using MS office applications including Excel.
* Data retrieval using SQL, analysis and presentation of information.
* Experience analysing and visualising data in R
* Experience of working in a large NHS organisation.
* Experience of working in a data science role
* Identifying and interpreting national policy and implementing required changes
Knowledge and Skills
* Skills in at least one programming language commonly used for analysis
* Advanced user of MS Office suite, in particular Excel & SQL Server
* Benchmarking, modelling and forecasting skills
* Knowledge of data warehouse environments
* Strong communication skills both written and verbal
* Advanced user in R or Python
* Use of analytical techniques, including supervised and unsupervised machine learning algorithms, such as regression modelling, decision trees and classification.
* Automation using SQL, VBA, and Microsoft apps
* Understanding of NHS data flows and information issues, including Data Standards, the Secondary Uses Service and commissioning information
* Working knowledge of NHS Data Standards and Information Systems
* NHS IT systems
