Role Overview
As a Community Speech and Language Therapist, you'll manage a caseload of adults with diverse and complex needs—supporting communication, eating and drinking, and associated behaviours. You'll deliver assessments, interventions, and person-centred therapy plans across community and residential settings.
Key Responsibilities
1. Caseload Management: Handle assessments, planning, interventions, and discharges within the care programme approach.
2. Therapy Delivery: Provide individual and group therapy to address communication and dysphagia needs.
3. Assessment & Treatment: Conduct comprehensive evaluations and develop tailored treatment plans.
4. Risk Management: Identify and manage risks in both clinical and community settings.
5. AAC Support: Recommend and implement AAC tools (e.g., Makaton, PECS, electronic aids).
6. Collaborative Work: Work within a multidisciplinary team to integrate therapy into daily routines.
7. Training & Guidance: Support and educate staff, carers, and families in communication strategies and safe practices.
8. Specialist Interventions: Deliver targeted interventions, including social skills and communication groups.
9. Leadership: Provide professional guidance to junior staff and MDT members.
10. Monitoring & Review: Evaluate therapy outcomes and adjust plans accordingly.
11. Capacity to Consent: Participate in assessments and uphold informed consent procedures.
12. Documentation & Reports: Maintain accurate records and contribute to MDT meetings and care planning.
13. Safeguarding & Health Promotion: Promote wellbeing and report any concerns regarding abuse or neglect.
Essential Requirements
1. HCPC registered Speech and Language Therapist.
2. Degree/diploma in Speech and Language Therapy.
3. Experience supporting adults with autism and learning disabilities.
4. Dysphagia assessment and treatment experience.
5. Familiarity with SEND legislation and adult care frameworks.
6. Community or residential work experience.
7. AAC assessment and implementation skills.
8. Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle.
Desirable Skills
1. Experience with Makaton, PECS, or similar systems.
2. Familiarity with health promotion and capacity assessments.
3. Training and supervision experience.
