HSBC’s Legal function plays a critical role in supporting the bank’s global operations, managing legal risk, and ensuring the efficient and effective use of external legal resources. We work closely with leading law firms to secure the best commercial and strategic outcomes for the bank.
The HSBC competition law team comprises of lawyers based in the UK and Hong Kong, all with Group-wide responsibilities. This role is in the UK-based team, managed by a senior competition lawyer who themselves reports to the Global Head of Competition Law, based in the UK.
Competition law is a material risk for the HSBC Group globally. We are currently seeking an ambitious individual to join our competition law team as a Senior Legal Counsel to provide expert competition law advice to Global Business Lines and Functions.
In this role, you will:
1. Identify, advise on and support the management of competition law issues across HSBC’s business lines and jurisdictions.
2. Provide guidance and advice on competition law issues to internal clients and provide competition law support to the bank’s own M&A transactions and investments.
3. Assist with the management of competition regulatory or internal investigations.
4. Formulate responses to regulatory consultations or calls for inputs to advance HSBC’s agenda or mitigate potential risks to HSBC’s businesses.
5. Identify and capture internal and external lessons learned in relation to competition law, ensuring that experience and actionable insights are shared with regional and Group stakeholders.
To be successful in this role you should meet the following requirements:
1. Qualified competition lawyers with experience across a broad spectrum of competition law concepts including behavioural issues (horizontal and vertical agreements and abuse of dominance), merger control and investigation management.
2. Strong technical legal skills and in-depth knowledge of competition law in a well-established regime.
3. Demonstrable ability to analyse the competition law implications of business proposals with relatively little supervision, including problem-solving ability.
4. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to translate legal issues into coherent briefings.
5. Demonstrably strong interpersonal skills including in particular team-working and influencing skills.
The base location for this role is London OR Birmingham with a hybrid working pattern.
